The 29-year-old hails from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. Parul ran barefoot as a teenager and competed in 800 metres in her school starting in 2011. She switched to 1500 m and 3000 m, before moving to 5000 m and competed professionally in the latter event. 

Chaudhary trained under Jaiveer Singh, a former international athlete and the Haryana athletics coach, who has often praised her hard work and claimed that she used to practice harder than his male students.

The steeplechase comprises 28 hurdles and seven water pits and is one of the roughest track events. Despite facing failures in her initial days, Chaudhary did not give up and eventually started performing well on international stages.

Parul Chaudhary won a gold medal at the 2003 Asian Games in Hangzhou in the 5000 m steeplechase. She registered a timing of 15:14.75 to finish first at the podium. She got past Japan’s Ririka Hironaka for the top position.

Parul Chaudhary Silver at Asian Games

The runner added another medal to her cabinet by winning silver in the 3000m women’s steeplechase at the 2003 Asian Games in Hangzhou. She registered a timing of 9:27.63. The 28-year-old has added to the silver medal she won in the 3000m women’s steeplechase. She was more than nine seconds behind Bahrain runner Winfred Yavi.

2023 Asian Athletics Championships

The Indian athlete won a gold medal in the 3000m steeplechase event at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok. The 28-year-old finished first with a timing of 9:38.76 ahead of China’s Xu Shuangshuang and Japan’s Reimi Yopshimura.
