UK-based club cricketer Rizwan Javed has been dealt a severe blow to his cricketing career after being handed a staggering 17-and-a-half-year ban from all forms of the sport. The ban comes in the wake of his involvement in attempted match-fixing during the 2021 Abu Dhabi T10 League, marking one of the longest suspensions ever imposed by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Following an extensive investigation, the ICC found Javed guilty of five breaches of the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) anti-corruption code. This decision underscores the gravity of his actions and the ICC’s unwavering commitment to maintaining the integrity of cricket worldwide.

Javed was among eight individuals charged by the ICC in September 2023 for their alleged roles in corrupting players during the T10 league. His refusal to respond to the charges or cooperate with the investigation only compounded the severity of his punishment.

ICC General Manager – Integrity, Alex Marshall, emphasized the significance of the ban, stating that it sends a clear message to anyone contemplating engaging in corrupt practices within the sport. The ban, effective from September 19, 2023, serves as a stark reminder that the ICC will not hesitate to mete out harsh penalties to uphold the integrity of cricket.

Notably, Bangladesh international Nasir Hossain, also implicated in the same case, received a two-year ban, with six months suspended. However, Javed’s lack of remorse and disregard for cricket’s regulations warranted the unprecedented length of his suspension.

The decision to impose the ban was made by Michael J Beloff KC, chair of the ICC code of conduct committee, signaling the ICC’s resolute stance against corruption and its commitment to preserving the spirit of fair play in cricket.
