Steelers’ QB Situation: Internal Division Over Kenny Pickett, No Interest in Big-Name QB Pursuit

As the Pittsburgh Steelers navigate their quarterback situation heading into the 2024 offseason, reports suggest that while there is internal division over former first-round pick Kenny Pickett, the team is not keen on pursuing a big-name quarterback to lead the franchise.

According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, despite speculation that the Steelers might consider veteran options like Justin Fields, Kirk Cousins, or Russell Wilson, the organization is committed to giving Pickett a third season to prove himself. This decision comes amidst apparent disagreement within the Steelers’ ranks, with some advocating for backup Mason Rudolph to be given the starting role after his impressive performance in the latter part of the 2023 season.

Rudolph, who took over as the starter late in the season and guided the team to three consecutive victories, is reportedly the team’s first offseason priority for re-signing. While Rudolph is open to returning to Pittsburgh, he is also expected to explore other offers if a deal isn’t reached by the start of the negotiating period on March 11.

Despite the commitment to Pickett and the potential re-signing of Rudolph, the Steelers are not ruling out adding competition at the quarterback position. Head coach Mike Tomlin has defended Pickett’s development, despite an injury-plagued 2023 campaign, but also hinted at the possibility of multiple players vying for snaps under center in the upcoming season.

If Rudolph doesn’t return and the team opts against pursuing a high-profile quarterback, alternatives could include drafting another quarterback or signing a mid-tier veteran free agent, such as former Tennessee Titans starter Ryan Tannehill.

As the offseason progresses, the Steelers will continue to evaluate their options at quarterback, balancing the potential of their current roster with the opportunity to explore new additions that could bolster their chances of success in the upcoming season.
