R Praggnanandhaa has created history by becoming India’s top-ranked chess player and rising to world number 4 in live chess ratings. He achieved this feat after a dramatic victory at the UzChess Masters 2025 in Tashkent. The 19-year-old Grandmaster clinched the title after defeating home favourite Nodirbek Abdusattorov in the final round. 

R Praggnanandhaa’s journey was marked by extraordinary resilience as he suffered two high-stakes losses in the middle rounds. Although he bounced back in a must-win situation in the final stages, including a high-profile victory over then India’s number 1, Arjun Erigiasi. 

With this win, his live ratings increased by 2778.3, officially making him the highest-rated Indian player, overtaking even the world champion Gukesh D in live classical ratings. Richard Rapport appreciated R Praggnanandhaa’s game despite losing and said, “When you go for this King’s Indian style of positions, you kind of dream of this kind of games!”

R Praggnanandhaa’s campaign in 2025 has been nothing short of spectacular. Earlier this year, he won the Tata Steel Masters and the Superbet Chess Classic, and now the UzChess Masters 2025, marking the third major classical title of the year. 

The victory secured him the $20,000 in prize money and boosted his lead in the FIDE standings, making him a strong contender for the Candidates Tournament 2026.
