Varun Chakravarthy Breaks Silence on Indian Team Omission After T20 World Cup 2021

Speculations surrounding the exclusion of Varun Chakravarthy, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) star spinner, from the Indian cricket team have been dispelled by the player himself, as he vehemently denies rumors of carrying an injury. Chakravarthy, known for his elusive spin bowling, rose to prominence after his selection for the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, where he was touted as India’s mystery spinner. However, his subsequent omission from the national squad raised eyebrows, leading to conjectures about the reasons behind his exclusion.

Addressing the rumors head-on, Chakravarthy has attributed his absence from the Indian team to his underwhelming performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season. Despite the initial promise showcased during the T20 World Cup, Chakravarthy’s form dipped during the IPL, resulting in his exclusion from national team considerations.

“It was very tough because right after I finished the World Cup, it was not a big injury; it was a very small injury. It just took me two or three weeks to be back on track, but after that, I got sidelined, and people kept giving the same excuse that I am injured, but on the other hand, I was not injured all that while. I don’t know, [if] it was just a rumour, or someone just wanting to spread this news about me so that they can sideline me. But that’s how life is; it is unfair. It was very hard on me,” he told CricXtasy.

“IPL 2022 was not a great season because what happened in 2021 after the World Cup got within me, and I was very desperate to be back in the Indian side. So I wanted to prove to everyone. I was being very desperate. I started changing many things in my bowling, which finally affected my mental peace, and I was not able to do my normal bowling also. So that IPL was bad for me,” he further said.

In a candid interview with Cricxtasy, Chakravarthy clarified that injury was not a factor in his omission from the Indian squad, refuting widespread speculations that suggested otherwise. Instead, he acknowledged his own shortcomings and acknowledged that his performance in the IPL did not meet the expected standards, consequently impacting his chances of representing the national team.
