This victory is more than just another win; it’s a dream that Neeraj Chopra saw when he was a kid.

Neeraj Chopra’s Childhood Dream

Neeraj Chopra grew up in a small village in Haryana. His rise to the top of world athletics was anything but easy. As a child, Chopra was captivated by the Golden Spike meet, watching it on television and dreaming of one day competing and winning.

He shared the dream he saw as a little boy and said, “I used to watch this meeting a lot as a kid,” Chopra revealed after his victory. “I watched people like Jan Zelezny and Usain Bolt winning the Golden Spike, and I dreamt of winning one as well. Now that dream has come true”.

The Road to Ostrava Golden Spike 2025

PC: World Athletics

Chopra’s early years were marked by challenges. He struggled with his weight as a child, prompting his family to encourage him to take up sports for fitness. A chance encounter with javelin throwers at Panipat’s Shivaji Stadium sparked his fascination with the event. Despite limited resources and training facilities, Chopra’s family, especially his father Satish Kumar, made significant sacrifices to support his ambitions, ensuring he had the proper diet and guidance. “All of us in our family made sure that Neeraj got proper guidance for becoming a successful javelin thrower. Our village also supported him and prayed for his success,” his father recalled.

Chopra’s rise was meteoric. From breaking junior national records to winning gold at the World U-20 Championships and then making history at the Tokyo Olympics, Chopra has consistently delivered on the biggest stages. Yet, the Ostrava Golden Spike remained a special goal. He had been scheduled to compete in 2023 and 2024 but was forced to withdraw due to injuries, making his 2025 appearance even more meaningful.

However, Neeraj Chopra delivered a commanding performance at the Ostrava Golden Spike 2025. After an initial foul on the first attempt, he gained his momentum to throw 83.45 meters on his second effort, which put him in third place. With another mind-blowing throw of 85.29 meters in the third attempt, he secured a gold medal. He could not cross the 90-meter mark again, which he hoped for.

Despite winning, he claimed that the win was not as satisfying. I’m not that happy with my performance today, but I’m very happy with the trophy. The amount of support we were getting from the crowd was crazy. I just wish I could have performed better for them,” he said.

The event will take place at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru, marking the first-ever World Athletics ‘A’ Category or Continental Tour Gold-level meet.

The tournament was originally scheduled for 24 May 2025 at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula, Haryana. However, the event was further postponed due to the cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan.

“Bringing the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 back this quickly has taken an enormous collective effort, and we’re happy to confirm its return on July 5. The energy around this event is bigger than ever, and we’re set to deliver a celebration of javelin that’s bolder, better, and even more unforgettable,” said Karan Yadav, chief commercial officer, JSW Sports.

Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 is set to be the highlight event for Indian sports as the first World Athletics Gold Label event in the country. Neeraj Chopra, who recently won the Paris Diamond League 2025, is expected to be the star contender. The announcement came after the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, which further elevated the tensions between the two nations. Nadeem’s decision is seen as a response to security concerns and the overall atmosphere after the attack, even though he gave other reasons for declining the invitation.

He said, “The (NC) Classic event is from 20th May (May 24), whereas I am scheduled to leave for Korea on 22nd May for the Asian Athletics Championship. I have been training hard for the Asian Championship, which will be held in Gumi, Korea, from May 27 to 31.”

Just a few days back, Neeraj Chopra confirmed the invitation from Arshad Nadeem stating that, “I have sent invitation to Arshad and he said he will get back to me after discussing with his coach. As of now, he is yet to confirm participation.”

The decision’s sensitive timing has led many to believe that it’s related to the terror attack, reflecting the complexities athletes sometimes face beyond the sporting arena.

Who Is Arshad Nadeem?

Arshad Nadeem is the reigning Olympic and Commonwealth Games champion. His breakthrough moment was the gold in the Paris Olympics 2024 and the Commonwealth Games 2022, where he threw a record-breaking throw of 90.18 meters, making him the first South Asian to cross the 90m mark in javelin.

Both Nadeem and Neeraj Chopra have developed a well-known rivalry, especially after the Paris Olympics 2024, where Chopra was defeated by Nadeem. The presence of both athletes in the Neeraj Chopra Classic was a highly anticipated occurrence, however, it looks like fans will now have to wait for this legendary rivalry to face off again.

The Neeraj Chopra Classic is an international athletics meet held in India, focusing on the javelin throw. The tournament is designed to honour Neeraj Chopra and to promote the sport in the region. It’s scheduled to take place on May 24 in Bengaluru and will feature some of the world’s top javelin throwers.

The online activities of athletes were studied over a period of four years by the Signify Group’s Threat Matrix reports. The period consisted of two Olympic Games and two World Championships where the online abuse faced by the athletes were analysed.

For this initiative by World Athletics, more than 1.4 million posts or comments were analysed, covering 2,438 track, field and road athletes. It isthe first time an international federation had conducted such an in-depth analysis.

World Athletics has not identified the 25 athletes and are yet to divulge on how the AI system will work. But the body confirmed that the number of athletes would be expanded next year.

“We have invested significant resources into conducting research into online abuse and one of our significant successes from this initiative has been our ability to offer athletes support and providing them with the tools to proactively protect themselves against online abuse,” said World Athletics president Sebastian Coe.

“Athlete welfare is at the very top of our priority list, and we will continue to put measures in place to ensure that athletes can confidently and safely engage with social media platforms.”

Of the more than 350,000 posts that was analysed during the Paris 2024 Olympics on X, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, 809 were verified as abusive, 18% of them racist, 13% sexual in nature, and 17% sexist. Two athletes received 82% of all the abuse.

Jamaican sprinter Junelle Bromfield spoke out in August about the cyber bullying – including death threats – she had suffered during the Paris Games over her relationship with Olympic 100 metres champion Noah Lyles.

Noah Lyles

Three out of the top-five abused athletes from the 2023 world championships in Budapest also featured in the top five most targeted athletes at the Paris Olympics.

Approximately 240,000 posts were captured for analysis from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which were held in 2021 due to the Covid pandemic, with 132 of them verified as abusive, with 63% of them aimed at two female athletes.

The study commissioned by World Athletics also concluded that emojis were being increasingly used in online abuse.

It said, “The data indicates that the ‘weaponisation of emojis’ has continued to increase, as emojis are often used to circumvent platform guidelines, being deployed with not immediately obvious abusive context.”
