<p style="text-align: justify;">The ATP Shanghai Masters 2024 is set to kick off its main draw from September 2 to 13. The qualifying rounds will start on September 30, multiple tennis stars are keen to boost their rankings and secure a spot in the ATP Finals 2024. Novak Djokovic is making a comeback after his surprising loss to Alexei Popyrin in the third round of the 2024 US Open.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Meanwhile, the reigning US Open champion Jannik Sinner is currently ranked World No. 1 and aiming to strengthen his lead further. Players like Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz are also looking to close the ranking gap. However, some of the top names will miss the tournament due to fitness and health concerns. Let’s take a closer look at the five players who have withdrawn from the 2024 Shanghai Masters.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Players Who Have Withdrawn from ATP Shanghai Masters 2024</h3>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">1. Hubert Hurkacz</h4>
<figure id="attachment_4875" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-4875" style="width: 1200px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-4875" src="https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Hubert-Hurkacz.webp" alt="Top 5 Player Withdrawals from ATP Shanghai Masters 2024" width="1200" height="675" srcset="https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Hubert-Hurkacz.webp 1200w, https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Hubert-Hurkacz-300x169.webp 300w, https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Hubert-Hurkacz-1024x576.webp 1024w, https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Hubert-Hurkacz-768x432.webp 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-4875" class="wp-caption-text">Hubert Hurkacz</figcaption></figure>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Defending champion Hubert Hurkacz will not be able to defend his title at the ATP Shanghai Masters. He sustained an injury during Wimbledon 2024 and has struggled to recover fully. Hurkacz was seeded second at the Japan Open, where he lost to Jack Draper in the second round. He also exited in the second round of the 2024 US Open, falling to Jordan Thompson. Due to his withdrawal, Hurkacz is expected to slip out of the top 10 rankings.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">2. Alex de Minaur</h4>
<figure id="attachment_4876" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-4876" style="width: 1200px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-4876" src="https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Alex-de-Minaur.webp" alt="Top 5 Player Withdrawals from ATP Shanghai Masters 2024" width="1200" height="675" srcset="https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Alex-de-Minaur.webp 1200w, https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Alex-de-Minaur-300x169.webp 300w, https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Alex-de-Minaur-1024x576.webp 1024w, https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Alex-de-Minaur-768x432.webp 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-4876" class="wp-caption-text">Alex de Minaur</figcaption></figure>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Alex de Minaur is also missing the ATP Shanghai Masters following a hip injury sustained at Wimbledon 2024 during his fourth-round match against Arthur Fils. Despite reaching the quarterfinals of Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open, injuries have hampered his breakthrough year. Currently ranked eighth in the race standings, de Minaur’s chances of qualifying for the ATP Finals could be in jeopardy if Novak Djokovic competes in Shanghai.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">3. Sebastian Korda</h4>
<figure id="attachment_4877" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-4877" style="width: 1200px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-4877" src="https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Sebastian-Korda.webp" alt="Top 5 Player Withdrawals from ATP Shanghai Masters 2024" width="1200" height="675" srcset="https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Sebastian-Korda.webp 1200w, https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Sebastian-Korda-300x169.webp 300w, https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Sebastian-Korda-1024x576.webp 1024w, https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Sebastian-Korda-768x432.webp 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-4877" class="wp-caption-text">Sebastian Korda</figcaption></figure>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The 2024 Washington Open champion Sebastian Korda will sit out the ATP Shanghai Masters due to an elbow injury he sustained earlier this year. He last competed at the US Open, where he lost in the second round to <a href="https://www.atptour.com/en/players/tomas-machac/m0fh/overview" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tomas Machac</a>. Korda who was seeded 16th, faced significant criticism for his underwhelming performance on home turf.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">4. Cameron Norrie</h4>
<figure id="attachment_4878" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-4878" style="width: 1200px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-4878" src="https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Cameron-Norrie.webp" alt="Top 5 Player Withdrawals from ATP Shanghai Masters 2024" width="1200" height="675" srcset="https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Cameron-Norrie.webp 1200w, https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Cameron-Norrie-300x169.webp 300w, https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Cameron-Norrie-1024x576.webp 1024w, https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Cameron-Norrie-768x432.webp 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-4878" class="wp-caption-text">Cameron Norrie</figcaption></figure>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Cameron Norrie who missed the 2024 US Open due to a forearm injury, has also withdrawn from the Shanghai Masters. The Briton&#8217;s return to action has been further delayed, and his last appearance on the court was at the Bastad Open, where he lost to Rafael Nadal in straight sets.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">5. Jan-Lennard Struff</h4>
<figure id="attachment_4879" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-4879" style="width: 1200px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-4879" src="https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Jan-Lennard-Struff.webp" alt="Top 5 Player Withdrawals from ATP Shanghai Masters 2024" width="1200" height="675" srcset="https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Jan-Lennard-Struff.webp 1200w, https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Jan-Lennard-Struff-300x169.webp 300w, https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Jan-Lennard-Struff-1024x576.webp 1024w, https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Jan-Lennard-Struff-768x432.webp 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-4879" class="wp-caption-text">Jan-Lennard Struff</figcaption></figure>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Jan-Lennard Struff is known for his ability to challenge top seeds, especially on the hard and clay courts. His match against four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz has showcased his on-court skills. However, Struff has pulled out of the tournament. His replacement Daniel Altmaier also withdrew paving the way for Italy’s Luca Nardi to compete at the Shanghai Masters.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Walkovers are quite common in tennis due to the short turnaround between matches and the demanding schedule. The term is commonly used when a player withdraws before the start of a match. Doing so in the middle of a match is referred to as retirement.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">To play the scheduled match, a lucky loser is called to replace a player who withdraws before their first-round match. However, when this occurs in the later rounds, a player advances to the following round without taking a single shot.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Aside from Novak Djokovic&#8217;s walkover against de Minaur, there has only been one other instance of it this Wimbledon season. Lucas Pouille retired earlier to their third-round encounter with an injury, thus the Australian benefited from it.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">While only a few walkovers have been granted at <a href="https://sportingscroll.com/2024/andy-murray-to-retire-from-tennis-after-wimbledon/3872/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wimbledon this year</a>, there have been numerous mid-match retirements throughout the event. Madison Keys was on the verge of triumph in her fourth-round match against Jasmine Paolini but had to call it quits at 5-5 in the third set.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Grigor Dimitrov was unable to complete the first set of his fourth-round match against <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniil_Medvedev" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Daniil Medvedev</a> and was forced to withdraw at 5-3. Other players who retired from the competition included Anna Kalinskaya, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, Camila Osorio, Thanasi Kokkinakis, and Hubert Hurkacz.</span></p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">Novak Djokovic to face either Taylor Fritz or Lorenzo Musetti in the Wimbledon semifinals</h3>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">A walkover was hardly how Djokovic envisioned himself reaching the Wimbledon semifinals. Nonetheless, he would be pleased to be another step closer to a 25th Major title. He could face Taylor Fritz or Lorenzo Musetti next.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Serb leads Fritz 9-0 in their head-to-head matchup and also has a 5-1 advantage over Musetti. He will be the clear favourite to defeat either of them and advance to another final at the All-England Club.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">If Djokovic makes it to the summit, he might face Carlos Alcaraz in a rematch from last year&#8217;s final. Daniil Medvedev, on the other hand, has the potential to play spoiler and eliminate the Spaniard to reach the final. In any case, the championship round promises to be entertaining.</span></p>
