Meanwhile, the young Spanish sensation Alcaraz secured the year-end World No. 1 ranking, highlighting a season marked by their intense rivalry and dominance in men’s tennis.

Jannik Sinner’s Win On Home Soil

Sinner’s victory on home soil was electrifying, with a passionate Italian crowd energising the 24-year-old player. His win was historic, making him only the third man, after John McEnroe and Boris Becker, to win multiple ATP Finals titles at home. The ATP Finals 2025 saw Sinner go undefeated throughout the tournament, never dropping a set, and finishing with the best win percentage in the event’s history.

In the first set, Sinner saved a set point with a powerful second serve at 5-6 and eventually won the tie-break with stunning shots that fired up the crowd. Despite Alcaraz breaking Sinner’s serve in the second set, the first player to do so in the tournament, the Italian quickly responded with an aggressive comeback and eventually won the game.

Carlos Alcaraz Secures World Number 1 Ranking

Carlos Alcaraz, who had already secured the No. 1 ranking before the tournament, finished the season with a remarkable record of 71 wins and 9 losses, including eight tournament titles, such as the French Open and US Open. Despite the loss in Turin, his overall season performance cemented his position at the top of the ATP rankings.

The rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz defined men’s tennis in 2025, as they won all four Grand Slam titles between them. Sinner claimed the Australian Open and Wimbledon, while Alcaraz took the French Open and US Open. They met multiple times during the year, with Alcaraz leading their head-to-head 10-6, but Sinner’s recent victories, especially at Wimbledon and the ATP Finals, have shown that their battles are far from one-sided, signalling an ongoing epic rivalry for tennis supremacy.

Looking ahead, the dynamic between Sinner and Alcaraz promises more excitement in 2026, as both players are still very young with the potential for many more clashes.

In the first round, which lasted 1 hour and 52 minutes, the sixth-seeded Indian, who won the men’s singles title at the Heilbronn Neckarcup 2024 Challenger event in Germany last week, defeated the opponent 7-6(1) 6-2.

Although there wasn’t much between the two players in the first set on Tuesday, Nagal triumphed in the tiebreak.

He then carried on with his outstanding first serve display, winning the second set against his Bosnian opponent.

In the second round, Nagal will play Alessandro Giannessi, a local player.

In the ATP live rankings, Nagal’s victory has moved him up four spots to a new career high of 73.

Sumit Nagal Used ATP Ranking for Qualifying

Sumit Nagal (Image: X)

The 26-year-old Indian has used his ATP Rankings to guarantee his place in the men’s singles bracket of the Paris Olympics.

In the Paris Olympics men’s singles competition, Nagal would be the lone Indian competitor. National Olympic Committees will confirm the athletes’ entries by June 19 after receiving notification from the International Tennis Federation (ITF) by June 12.

Nagal, who was ranked last among eligible players who obtained quotas through the global rankings, made the cut after moving up eighteen spots in the singles standings last week.

He was ranked 95th the previous week, but after winning the ATP Challenger championship at the Heilbronn Neckarcup in Germany on Sunday, he rose to a career-high of 77th.

If none of the French singles players were able to earn a direct berth through rankings, France had one quota spot set aside as the host nation.

But as the hosts were able to use the ATP Rankings to reach their full four-quota allocation in men’s singles, the host nation quota was added back into the pool, raising the cutoff to 57 from 56.

Nagal is ranked 77th overall, but among the qualified players who received quotas through world rankings, he is ranked last.
