Yes, you read that right. The man who pulled the strings for Barcelona and Spain, applying to coach India’s men’s football team, sounds unreal, right? But believe it or not, Xavi’s name did land in the All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) inbox this week, and it made plenty of headlines. But, as quickly as the excitement built up, it faded. The AIFF didn’t shortlist Xavi for the big job. But why? Let’s see.

Xavi Hernandez’s Stunning Application

Xavi, the midfield magician, actually sent an application to AIFF for the vacant India head coach position.

The AIFF technical committee was surprised, even a bit stunned, to see a name as big as Xavi, right alongside Indian football regulars like Stephen Constantine and Khalid Jamil. Xavi sent his application personally by email, making things even more striking for everyone involved.

Why Was Xavi Rejected?

Let’s cut straight to the chase. Was Xavi Hernandez rejected because he didn’t have the credentials? Far from it. His CV is almost unbelievable:

Achievements

Details

As a Player

4x Champions League, 8x La Liga, World Cup

As a Coach

Won league titles with Barcelona and Al-Sadd

Recognition

Regarded as one of football’s greatest minds

But even with all these medals, AIFF did not move forward with Xavi’s application.

The real reason? Money.

AIFF officials openly admitted that Xavi’s financial expectations were much higher than what the Indian football ecosystem could afford right now. In simple terms, Xavi’s salary demands were so high that they left the technical committee searching for words.

A committee member summed it up well: “Even if Xavi was genuinely interested in Indian football and could be convinced to take up the job, we would need a lot of money.” The budget just couldn’t stretch that far.

Some fans are a bit disappointed, but others see this as a reality check. Hiring a global superstar is tempting, but Indian football needs sustainability and development as much as glamour. The move might have made international waves, but it just wasn’t practical in 2025.

“I just want to enjoy it and I don’t want to think about it. I feel like I’m free to play football and then we’ll see what happens next year.”

Salah’s hints that he might leave the club comes from the fact that his contract with Liverpool expires this summer and the management has not communicated to him regarding a potential renewal.

“No-one at the club has spoken to me about contracts, so I’m just like, ‘OK, I’m playing my last season’ and see what happens at the end of the season.

When asked about Salah’s comments, Liverpool manager Arne Slot said, “It’s a lot of ‘if’. At this moment he is one of ours and I am really happy with him being one of ours and he played really well.”

“I don’t talk about contracts from players but I can talk for hours about how Mo played today.”

Vikings Make a Change in Quarterback Room

The Vikings have made a move in their quarterback lineup.

Minnesota has signed quarterback Brett Rypien, the team announced on Wednesday, and has waived 2023 draft pick Jaren Hall.

Brett Rypien joins the Vikings after being released by the Bears on Tuesday. He will be joining Sam Darnold and Nick Mullens in the quarterback room, stepping in after first-round pick J.J. McCarthy suffered a season-ending knee injury during his preseason debut.

At 28 years old, Rypien signed with Chicago in March and spent the 2024 offseason with the NFC North rival. He impressed during the Hall of Fame Game on August 1, throwing three touchdown passes and leading the Bears to a 21-17 victory over the Texans. Despite bad weather cutting the game short, he completed 11 of 15 passes for 166 yards.

Brett Rypien originally signed with Denver as an undrafted rookie in 2019 and spent his first four NFL seasons with the Broncos. He played against the Vikings almost exactly two years ago in a preseason game in Denver, finishing 14 of 21 for 137 yards and an interception.

While with Denver, Brett Rypien overlapped with current Vikings offensive coaches, including running game coordinator/running backs coach Curtis Modkins and offensive line coach Chris Kuper.

In 2023, Rypien was on the Rams’ active roster from September 13 to November 7 before being waived. He then spent time on the Seahawks and Jets practice squads.

In 10 NFL games (with four starts), Rypien has completed 98 of 168 passes for 950 yards, four touchdowns, and nine interceptions.

5 Key Facts About New Vikings QB Brett Rypien

1. Nephew of Super Bowl MVP

Rypien’s uncle, Mark Rypien, was named Super Bowl XXVI MVP after leading Washington to a 37-24 victory over Buffalo on January 26, 1992. That Super Bowl was held at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

Mark Rypien had a 14-season NFL career, winning two Super Bowls (including Super Bowl XXII against the Broncos), earning two Second-Team All-Pro honors, and receiving two Pro Bowl selections (1989 and 1991).

2. Former Boise State Star

Brett Rypien played college football at Boise State, where he became the Mountain West’s all-time leader in passing yards (13,581), completions (1,036), and 300-yard passing games (21). He surpassed Kellen Moore, who had 16 such games from 2008-11.

He was named the 2018 Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year and was the Mountain West Championship Offensive MVP in 2017 after throwing for 256 yards (with a long of 59) in a win over Fresno State. He then had a standout performance in the Las Vegas Bowl, throwing for 362 yards and two touchdowns against Oregon.

3. Hails from Washington

Brett Rypien grew up in Spokane, Washington, where he attended Shadle Park High School and played both baseball and football.

He was the quarterback for Shadle Park’s varsity football team all four years, setting Washington state records for career passing yards (13,044) and completions (1,006), as well as single-season records for passing yards (4,552) and touchdowns (50). He surpassed Kellen Moore in all four categories.

Brett Rypien graduated early and earned valedictorian honors.

Fun fact: Rypien shares his alma mater with Terry Davis, an award-winning American novelist and professor emeritus of English at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

4. Athletic Family Background

Brett and Mark Rypien are not the only athletes in their family.

Another of Brett’s uncles, Wes, was a Canadian boxing champion. His older cousin, Wes Jr., played professionally in the Western Hockey League, and his younger cousin Rick played six NHL seasons with the Vancouver Canucks before tragically passing away in 2011.

Cousin Shane Churla played 11 NHL seasons and later worked as a scout for the Montreal Canadiens.

Brett’s father, Tim, was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 1982 MLB June Amateur Draft and played three minor league seasons.

5. Mental Health Advocate

Rypien’s cousin Rick passed away after a battle with clinical depression, which profoundly affected Rypien. At 15, Rypien lost Rick, who was just 27 years old.

Brett Rypien has become a mental health advocate, emphasizing that “at some point or another, everyone goes through their own struggle with mental health.” In 2020, he represented Mental Health America for the NFL’s My Cause My Cleats campaign, wearing cleats with “Break the Stigma” on one side and Rick’s jersey No. 37 on the other.

The action-packed games, thrilling rivalries and prominent players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Pele, Lionel Messi and many others, have played a major role in elevating the stature of football as a highly competitive and professional sport at a global level. Additionally, with the inclusion of intensely competitive leagues and tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup, English Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, and the Bundesliga, the sport’s popularity has transcended to unprecedented heights in the past few decades.

While the game of football is often acknowledged by the fans for its fuming rivalries and ever-growing competitive spirit, the game is also hailed as a pioneer in the sporting arena for its remarkable records. Although most football aficionados know about numerous stellar mainstream records smashed by their favorite stalwarts, there are numerous records that were established by legendary football players in the past and have still not been surpassed by any football player in the world.

In this article, we will take a closer look at the top five insane records in the world of football that have never been surpassed and possess high chances of never being broken in the future.

The Lightspeed Hat Trick

While the illustrious past of football has witnessed numerous hat tricks being smashed by iconic footballers, the record for fastest hat trick has been established by Alex Torr while playing for Rawson Spring. Alex Torr, the then-twenty-year-old center forward, smashed a thrilling hat-trick at breakneck speed against Gardens in a mere seventy-second time span. Alex Torr’s stellar triple attack against Gadems not only uplifted the morale of his squad members but also assisted the Rawson Spring in clinching the match by a brilliant 7-1 margin. The incredible performance by Alex Torr, which made him strike three goals in a time span of 70 seconds, established him as a highly competitive and one of the most reliable forwards in the squad.

The Highest Number of Red Cards

Unfortunately, not all records established are commemorated in the world of records. Gerardo Bedoya holds one such record for obtaining the highest number of red cards in his playing career. Former Colombian footballer and current manager, Gerardo Alberto Bedoya Múnera, who played as a defender, was sent back from the field maximum times after receiving a red card for an unbelievable forty-six times. Often hailed as ‘the beast’ of the football field, he started off his youth football career with Envigado and represented senior clubs including Deportivo Pereira, Deportivo Cali, Racing Club, Boca Juniors, Colon, Puebla, Cúcuta Deportivo, Millonarios, and Santa Fe. Gerardo Bedoya received the highest number of red cards, i.e., 14 during his stint with Deportivo Cali (1998–2001, 2003).

The Highest Number of Goals Scored by a Goalkeeper

Although goalkeepers are generally restricted to the penalty area of their own team and don’t actively involve themselves in scoring goals for their team, a few goalkeepers in history have been trendsetters for scoring match-winning goals for their respective teams. The Brazilian goalkeeper, Rogerio Ceni, holds the record for smashing the highest number of goals in the world. In a flourishing football career spanning over 25 years, with a phenomenal total of 129 goals, Rogerio Ceni scored his 100th goal on August 4, 2011, assisting his Sao Paulo squad to a remarkable 3-0 victory. Moreover, Rogerio Ceni has also been acknowledged by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics for being the goalkeeper to have scored the highest number of goals in the history of the sport.

The Highest Number of FIFA World Cup Appearances

The FIFA World Cup, also simply called “the World Cup”, is often hailed as the greatest football league in the world. While numerous football players have garnered enormous fame with their record-breaking performances at the FIFA World Cup, Lionel Messi is also recognized as the G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Time) for holding the record for the highest number of appearances. Representing the Argentina squad, the legendary footballer, Lionel Messi, has appeared in a total of 26 World Cup matches. Although footballers, including Lothar Matthäus and Miroslav Klose, are quite close to matching up Messi’s record for the highest number of appearances in the FIFA World Cup, no football player has been able to actually surpass Messi’s record till date.

The Highest Number of International Goals

While goals in all sports are commemorated in the game of football by the fans with the same exuberance, international goals add another wave of excitement among the fans throughout the world. Cristiano Ronaldo, the stalwart of football, holds the record for scoring the highest number of international goals in his illustrious football career so far. Representing the Portugal squad, Ronaldo has scored a phenomenal total of 128 international goals, leading the Portugal side to numerous victories. While other iconic football players, including Sunil Chhetri, Lionel Messi, and Ali Daei, are often considered to be in the same race, not even one football player has been able to beat the legendary Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo at smashing the highest number of international goals so far.

French striker Karim Benzema, currently with Real Madrid, has reportedly expressed a desire to leave Al-Ittihad, the Saudi Arabian club he joined in 2022. This decision follows a lackluster season for Benzema with Al-Ittihad, where he managed to score only three goals in 14 appearances.

Benzema’s departure is anticipated to be a significant setback for Al-Ittihad, considering he was one of their most high-profile signings. The 35-year-old striker, known for his successful career with clubs like Lyon, Real Madrid, and the French national team, boasts numerous accolades, including the prestigious Ballon d’Or in 2022.

The announcement of Benzema’s departure has ignited speculation about his future destination. Reports suggest the possibility of a return to Real Madrid, where he spent 14 years before joining Al-Ittihad. Alternatively, the Premier League has emerged as a potential destination, with links to clubs such as Manchester United or Chelsea.

Regardless of his next move, Benzema’s exit from Al-Ittihad is a significant development in the football landscape. His decision to leave after just one season highlights the challenges players face when adapting to new leagues and cultures. Moreover, it prompts questions about the future trajectory of Al-Ittihad, which will now need to secure a suitable replacement for Benzema if they aim to maintain competitiveness at the highest level.

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson finds himself on uncertain ground following discussions with the club’s chairman, Steve Parish, in the aftermath of their demoralizing 5-0 defeat against Arsenal. Hodgson has been issued a warning that his tenure could come to an end if he fails to ignite a revival in the team’s performance.

The 76-year-old, who has been at the helm of Crystal Palace since 2017, is facing increasing scrutiny, with potential replacements such as Julen Lopetegui and Graham Potter being linked to the managerial role. Hodgson’s recent handling of substitutions and comments about the club’s supporters have added fuel to the speculation surrounding his position.

Despite assertions from Hodgson that he is not concerned about losing his job, the recent discussions with Chairman Parish have raised significant concerns about his future at the club. The situation is particularly delicate as Crystal Palace currently sits in 15th place in the Premier League, holding only a five-point cushion over Luton, the team in the relegation zone with a game in hand.

The upcoming match against Sheffield United is poised to be a critical juncture for Hodgson, as his performance in this game could be a determining factor in whether he retains his position until the end of the season. As the uncertainty looms over Crystal Palace, fans and football enthusiasts await developments in this managerial saga, with Hodgson’s future hanging in the balance.

West Ham United is on the verge of securing a loan deal with Manchester City for midfielder Kalvin Phillips for the remainder of the season. The 28-year-old midfielder, made available for loan by City, has attracted interest from Juventus, though no agreement has been reached with the Italian club at this stage.

While personal terms are not anticipated to be an obstacle, West Ham is set to cover Phillips’ salary as negotiations over the loan deal continue. Phillips, an England international, is returning to England with the rest of the City squad from Abu Dhabi. Although the deal is not yet finalized, discussions are underway regarding an option to make the move permanent in the summer.

With just two starts for City this season, Phillips is eager to secure regular first-team football and has expressed the desire to leave the Etihad in the January transfer window. West Ham’s interest aligns with their need for reinforcement in the midfield, following the departure of key defensive midfielder Declan Rice to Arsenal for £105 million in the summer. Tomas Soucek, another integral midfielder for West Ham, signed a contract extension until 2027 earlier this year.

Phillips’ potential move to West Ham comes as a strategic step to revive his playing opportunities, as he has struggled to secure a spot in Pep Guardiola’s team at Manchester City, falling down the pecking order in the midfield. As negotiations progress, football enthusiasts await the official announcement of Kalvin Phillips’ loan move to West Ham United.
