In typical mid-major fashion, the opportunity to secure a spot in the Big Dance is up for grabs for any team willing to seize it. With five teams concluding the regular season with impressive records both overall and in conference play, the stage is set for an intense and competitive conference tournament.

Toledo emerges as the regular season titleholder with a commendable record of 20-11, including a dominant 14-4 conference record. However, Akron, Ohio, and Central Michigan are hot on the heels of the Rockets, ready to challenge their supremacy. Despite holding the No. 1 seed last year, Toledo stumbled in the tournament championship against Kent State, underscoring the unpredictable nature of postseason play.

Two prestigious ACC teams clash as No. 7 Duke hosts Notre Dame at the historic Cameron Indoor Stadium for a Wednesday night showdown.

The start of Micah Shrewsberry’s tenure hasn’t gone according to plan for Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish (7-15) have struggled with a 2-9 record in ACC play, entering Wednesday’s game on a six-game losing streak and currently tied with Louisville for the bottom spot in the conference. Despite the team’s struggles, freshman guard Markus Burton has been a shining light, averaging a team-leading 16.2 points per game and scoring in double figures in 15 consecutive contests since December 2.

Duke (16-5), on the other hand, is looking to bounce back from a recent loss to archrival North Carolina last Saturday, which dropped them to third place in the ACC standings. The Blue Devils allowed a season-high 93 points to the Tar Heels while shooting 50% from the field. Sophomore center Kyle Filipowski leads Duke with averages of 17.7 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game.

This matchup marks the second meeting between the two teams this season, with Duke emerging victorious in their previous encounter in South Bend on January 6 with a 67-59 win, propelled by a career-high 23 points from sophomore forward Mark Mitchell. Clemson men’s basketball achieved a significant milestone with their upset victory over No. 3 North Carolina on Tuesday, marking a rare triumph in Chapel Hill.

Facing another daunting road challenge against the Tar Heels, Clemson appeared poised for another unfavorable outcome. Before Tuesday’s game, Clemson had only managed to defeat UNC once on their home court.

However, the Tigers pulled off a remarkable feat by securing an 80-76 win against the Tar Heels, propelled by another impressive scoring performance from P.J. Hall. This victory allowed head coach Brad Brownell’s team to break free from the shackles of history, becoming only the second team in program history to emerge victorious at The Dean Smith Center.

The outcome of the game was not only surprising but also crucial for Clemson, given their position on the fringes of NCAA tournament qualification.

Previous victories against teams like Alabama, TCU, and South Carolina had hinted at Clemson’s potential to compete with top-tier opponents. Yet, winning at Chapel Hill holds special significance. With a current record of 15-7 (5-6 in ACC play), the future is looking brighter for the Tigers.

Clemson’s history on the road against UNC has been overwhelmingly unfavorable, with the Tar Heels dominating the series in Chapel Hill. Prior to this win, UNC had won 76 of its last 78 home games against Clemson.
