Fox and Monday Night Football Perform Well

Monday Night Football

Fox’s Sunday afternoon game also attracted a large audience, especially because it marked Tom Brady’s debut in the commentary box. The game drew 23.93 million viewers, making it another hit of the week.

Both Monday Night Football and Sunday Night Football performed strongly as well. Monday Night Football had 20.5 million viewers across ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, and online streaming platforms. On the other hand, Sunday Night Football had 20 million viewers on NBC, and the total went up to 22.8 million when streaming numbers were added in.

Historic Game Broadcast from South America

For the first time in NFL history, a game was broadcast live from South America. The Philadelphia Eagles faced off against the Green Bay Packers in a game streamed live from Brazil. This game attracted 14 million viewers across Peacock and local Brazilian channels, which is almost double the audience from Peacock’s last game broadcasted in December 2023.

Amazon Prime’s Thursday Night Football

Week two of the NFL season began with Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime. The Buffalo Bills won against the Miami Dolphins with a score of 31-10. The game pulled in about 14.96 million viewers, making it the third-largest audience for a Thursday Night Football game on Amazon Prime since they started broadcasting. Although this was slightly less than last year’s opener, it was still well above the 2023 average of 11.83 million viewers.

New Streaming Plans for NFL

The NFL plans to continue pushing its streaming services later in the season. For the first time, two Christmas Day games will be streamed on Netflix, offering viewers more ways to watch their favourite teams.

Dallas Cowboys’ star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb has been placed on the NFL commissioner’s exempt list. But what exactly does this mean, and how will it impact his playing status for the 2024 season? Let’s break down the key details regarding the NFL commissioner’s exempt list and its significance for players like Lamb.

What is the Commissioner’s Exempt List in the NFL?

The NFL commissioner’s exempt list is defined as a “special player status” reserved for unique situations, according to NFL.com. This list provides teams with roster flexibility by allowing them to remove a player from their 53-man active roster without the need for immediate replacement. However, players on this list are still part of the team, and their contracts remain active.

Unlike other forms of suspension or removal, the exempt list acts as a temporary placeholder rather than a punishment. Players on this list continue to receive their salary but are not allowed to play in any games during their time on it. It was designed to handle cases where a player’s circumstances require an extended leave from active participation, either due to personal conduct issues, legal matters, or physical concerns that need to be resolved before resuming play.

How Does the Commissioner’s Exempt List Work?

Players placed on the commissioner’s exempt list are essentially on paid leave. While they remain part of the team, they are not allowed to participate in games. However, they are still permitted to attend team meetings, and training sessions, and receive treatments at the team facility. This setup helps players stay engaged with the team and maintain their physical fitness during their absence, though they remain ineligible to compete on game day.

One important detail is that only NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has the authority to place a player on this list. Teams cannot unilaterally decide to move a player onto the exempt list. Once on the list, the commissioner has sole discretion over how long a player stays there and when they will be eligible to return to the active roster. This centralized decision-making ensures consistency across the league regarding player availability.

Reasons for Being Placed on the Exempt List

A player may be placed on the commissioner’s exempt list for a wide range of reasons. While the list is often used in situations involving legal or disciplinary issues, it has also been utilized for players dealing with personal matters or contractual disputes that result in temporary absences.

The exempt list became a more common tool after 2014 when then-Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was placed on the list for the entire season following child abuse allegations. This high-profile case set a precedent, and since then, the list has been employed more regularly in similar situations.

Notable players who have been placed on the list in the past include Michael Vick (2009) during his legal troubles, Jonathan Vilma (2012) for his role in the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal, Greg Hardy (2014) for domestic violence charges, Josh Brown (2016), Reuben Foster (2018), and Kareem Hunt (2018).

Why is CeeDee Lamb on the Commissioner’s Exempt List?

CeeDee Lamb found himself on the commissioner’s exempt list when the Cowboys were granted a two-game roster exemption. This decision gave the team flexibility while Lamb, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, worked on returning to full form after missing training camp. The team avoided occupying a valuable roster spot with a player who wasn’t game-ready.

Lamb had held out of training camp due to contract negotiations but eventually agreed to a four-year, $136 million contract extension. The deal includes a record-breaking $38 million signing bonus for wide receivers and guarantees $100 million in total. His annual salary of $34 million makes Lamb the second-highest-paid receiver in the NFL, only trailing Minnesota Vikings’ star Justin Jefferson.

Impact of the Commissioner’s Exempt List on Lamb’s Season

Being placed on the commissioner’s exempt list doesn’t necessarily mean that Lamb will miss significant game time, but it does provide the Cowboys with a bit of breathing room while he ramps up for the regular season. Once Lamb is fully prepared to return to action, the team will have the flexibility to reinstate him to the active roster without penalty. However, the Cowboys’ use of the exempt list in this case is a strategic way to manage their roster during Lamb’s re-acclimation to the game.

Who Else is Currently on the Commissioner’s Exempt List?

Cleveland Browns rookie defensive lineman Mike Hall Jr. is another player currently placed on the commissioner’s exempt list. Hall is facing legal issues after being charged with domestic violence. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges, but his placement on the list indicates that the NFL is taking a cautious approach to his situation while legal proceedings unfold.

As with other players on the exempt list, Hall is not allowed to play in games or attend them, and he cannot participate in team practices. However, he is permitted to attend meetings, engage in individual workouts, and receive therapy or rehabilitation at the Browns’ facilities. This ensures that Hall remains physically prepared to return, should the legal case conclude in his favor and the NFL decide to allow him back into active play.

This offseason we’ve talked a lot about many Chicago Bears players. The Buzz has been created by Keenan Allen and Rome Odunze as general manager Ryan Poles completely revamped the team’s wide receiver group. When he decided to stay in Chicago for the time being, Jaylon Johnson made headlines, and Montez Sweat is still the main topic of discussion when talking about the defence. Even more attention has been paid to Tory Taylor, the rookie punter, and his potential as a weapon on special teams. There have, of course, been tales of Caleb Williams. Caleb Williams’s stories abound.

But a select group of players won’t make or break the team. Although the most talked-about players frequently produce the biggest plays, as nose tackle Andrew Billings demonstrated the previous season, sometimes the people who put in the grunt work have the most impact when it matters most.

In keeping with that, the following list of Chicago Bears players might have a greater impact on the team than their level of recognition outside of Halas Hall.

T.J. EDWARDS – LINEBACKER (Chicago Bears)

T.J. EDWARDS

Since Sweat arrived and improved the Chicago Bears’ defence’s pass rush on his own, there’s no denying that he should be regarded as the team’s 2023 MVP. But without Edwards’ play, which improved every week, the team most likely wouldn’t have made the same progress that it did during the year. In head coach Matt Eberflus’ scheme, Edwards plays the crucial position of weakside linebacker, where he must get to the ball to rack up tackles and cause takeaways.

That’s exactly what he did.

Edwards led the club in tackles with an astounding 155, good for seventh most in the NFL. In addition, he forced one fumble, recovered two interceptions, and intercepted three passes. Though it won’t appear on the stat sheet, Tremaine Edmunds also wouldn’t have this pick-six if Edwards hadn’t given Cedric Tillman such a big hit.

Edwards will be crucial to the team’s success in 2024 if he just continues where he left off from the previous season. He has the potential to become one of the league’s top linebackers if he continues to improve as he grows more accustomed to playing in Eberflus’ scheme.

ROSCHON JOHNSON – RUNNING BACK (Chicago Bears)

ROSCHON JOHNSON (Image: X)

D’Andre Swift, a versatile rusher who can also contribute in the passing game should be the main focus of the Chicago Bears’ rushing attack this season. But in the NFL, the blowback is essentially over. Most coaches use a running back-by-committee strategy unless their club has a player like Christian McCaffrey, Saquon Barkley, or Derrick Henry leading the way. Although the Bears might not distribute the carries equally between Swift and their RB2, Johnson will likely see a lot of snaps from the latter.

Johnson showed flashes of the physical power that brought the Chicago Bears to him in last year’s draft, but he never rushed for 40 yards in a game and averaged just over five carries. Given that Khalil Herbert’s contract expires at the end of this season, the team will probably want to see more of him in 2024.

Poles may feel confident about moving ahead with that combination, letting Hert depart in free agency, and possibly restocking the room with another youngster if Johnson performs well this season as Swift’s lightning to his thunder. If not, he may want to think about keeping Herbert on board or taking a more important action. In any case, it appears that Johnson will see more playing time this year.

ZACCH PICKENS – DEFENSIVE TACKLE (Chicago Bears)

ZACCH PICKENS (Image: X)

Gervon Dexter’s ability to take the field as the team’s next starting three-tech has been the main topic of discussion over the summer regarding the defensive line. Justifiably so, considering that the defence must perform to its high standards if he is not able to exert pressure from the middle of the pocket. But in an ideal scenario, the Bears would like to attack with two waves of linemen. This would enable the club to maintain the pass rushers’ maximum level of freshness throughout the fourth quarter while simultaneously giving opposing offensive lines a different look.

The Chicago Bears will need Pickens to develop just as much as they need Dexter to develop to do that. Pickens spent most of the previous season filling in as Billings’ nose tackle backup, accounting for barely 25% of the team’s defensive plays. This year, he has the chance to demonstrate his versatility by performing three tech reps. One of the team’s smallest position groupings, if not the thinnest, is still defensive tackle.

The Poles only added Byron Cowart and a few UDFAs to the roster this summer. Since Cowart spent last season bouncing between the practice squads of the Chiefs, Texans, and Dolphins, it’s difficult for UDFAs to make a significant impact in their first seasons. Pickens, on the other hand, seems to have the best chance of taking over as a DT on the Chicago Bears’ second unit.

Prisco’s rankings are bound to spark some discussion, but one thing is certain: Patrick Mahomes is at the top of his list.

He has the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback ranked No. 1 once more, and for good cause. Mahomes just won back-to-back championships with Kansas City, giving him three Super Bowls to start his career. Prisco even questions whether he should be regarded as the new GOAT if he can lead the Chiefs to a three-peat, which has never been accomplished in NFL history.

Although Mahomes’ position at the top of the list shouldn’t surprise you, some other names and positions could. In this story, however, we’ll focus on the top 10 offensive players ranked by Prisco, along with an explanation of each ranking, beginning with No. 15 in Kansas City.

Who are the 10 offensive players in the NFL as per Pate Prisco

NFL Player

1. Patrick Mahomes

Despite having lower numbers last year, he proved during the playoffs that he is the league’s top player and is quickly approaching the status of all-time great. Will he be deemed the greatest player of all time if he wins three straight seasons? (With an overall ranking of No. 1st)

2. Trent Williams

He’s still the best-left tackle in the game at thirty-six. In addition to being essential to their run strategy, he is a superb pass defender. The only thing that worries me is when he will begin to look older. (With an overall ranking of No. 3rd)

3. Tyreek Hill

His speed frightens defensive backs and coordinators. He alters the way opponents play with his ability to sprint by people and convert short passes into big runs, collecting 119 catches for the Dolphins last season. (With an overall ranking of No. 4th)

4. Josh Allen

It was believed that he didn’t play well even though he led the NFL in total yards and touchdowns (44) when adding his passing and rushing touchdowns. Although he does turn the ball over much too often, he was and will once again be a strong contender for MVP this season. (With an overall ranking of No. 6th)

5. Justin Jefferson

He only made nine starts due to injuries last season, which is why his fourth-season total of 68 catches was a career low. However, he set a career-high with 107.4 receiving yards per game on average. (With an overall ranking of No. 7th)

6. Christian McCaffrey

He is the best back in the game; a dual threat who can run and catch the ball to put a defence to sleep. He is the quintessential modern-day back, and he is compensated accordingly. (With an overall ranking of No. 8th)

7. Ja’Marr Chase

For the Bengals in 2023, Chase enjoyed a fantastic season despite Joe Burrow’s absence. He recorded a career-high seven touchdown receptions on 100 catches. Anticipate that the Bengals will soon sign him to a large contract. (With an overall ranking of No. 13th)

8. Joe Burrow

Due to a calf strain that ended in a season-ending wrist injury that essentially ended the Bengals’ prospects of making the playoffs, he was only able to play in 10 games in 2023. He’s a star on the field. He must remain there, though. All that’s preventing him is that. (With an overall ranking of No. 15th)

9. Lamar Jackson

His next goal is to lead his team to the Super Bowl after winning his second MVP award the previous season. He is a much better thrower now, and under offensive coordinator Todd Monken, that trend should continue this year in Year 2. (With an overall ranking of No. 16th)

10. Penei Sewell

He is currently in his fourth season and is among the top offensive linemen in the league. He has great size, athleticism, and run-game mauling ability. Everything is his. (With an overall ranking of No. 17th)

The pay amount could even go as high as $21 billion. This is one of the most competitive disputes in the sports industry, and against the opinions of some, it began as a pointless court petition that eventually became a classic example of an antitrust law case study. There will be a hearing on this case on Wednesday. The lawsuit’s journey started in 2015.

What is the Case NFL Antitrust Lawsuit?

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-3433 size-full" src="https://sportingscroll.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/NFL-commissioner-Roger-Goodell.jpg" alt="NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is among those who are expected to testify during a trial in Los Angeles that is set to open this week. (George Walker IV / Associated Press)

The National Football League is selling a portion of its TV rights in this deal. The NFL was sued in 2015 by Mucky Duck, a bar in San Francisco for handling its out-of-market broadcasts. The lawsuit proceeded through the standard court proceedings throughout the years and was dropped before being accepted on appeal.

It has been alleged that the NFL and its clubs are united in their pursuit of television rights, thereby limiting the options available to consumers. The NFL Sunday Ticket is more expensive than a typical broadcast match, and the cost of broadcasting these off-season games was higher overall, according to the class action lawsuit.

Additionally, consumers were forced to purchase products they didn’t want to by the NFL’s monopoly, which prevented them from exercising their right to select another business. A cartel and monopoly were created when different teams combined to pool their broadcasting rights, causing enormous losses for fans, bars, and other businesses.

What Happens Exactly?

Several NFL officials will be called to testify in front of the jury. Since these Sunday tickets are part of an existing proceeding elsewhere, DirectTv, the company that offers them, will not be involved in this action.

What are the US anti-trust laws?

These anti-competition laws forbid business mergers, cartels, and transactions that establish monopolies and limit the ability of customers to exercise their options. In the US, antitrust laws triple the amount and now the $7 billion lawsuit may potentially reach $21 billion.

Responding to a decline in interest, the NFL took an innovative approach to the Pro Bowl in the previous season by transforming it into a series of engaging skills competitions and events for both players and fans. The apex of this reimagined format is a thrilling flag football game that determines the winning conference. As we eagerly await the 2024 Pro Bowl, let’s explore the progression of Pro Bowl prize money, delving into the incentives for winning and losing conferences from its inception in 1971 to the present day.

The modern Pro Bowl format, introduced last season, includes skills competitions where each conference can earn points. The ultimate decider of victory is the flag football game, offering a dynamic and entertaining conclusion to the weekend.

In the 2023 Pro Bowl, the AFC initially led after the skills competitions, only for the NFC to emerge victorious in the flag football game, securing the overall win. As we look forward to the 2024 Pro Bowl, it’s noteworthy to consider the financial rewards awaiting the winners. According to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, players from the victorious conference will each receive $88,000 in prize money—an increase of $4,000 from the previous year’s $84,000 prize. This establishes a new record for Pro Bowl prize money, highlighting the league’s commitment to acknowledging and rewarding participating players.

Even for players on the losing side, the Pro Bowl bonus remains substantial. Each player from the losing conference will receive $44,000, underscoring the value the NFL places on player participation in the Pro Bowl.

The overall payouts for Pro Bowl players have steadily increased since 2016, nearly doubling since 2011. This trend aligns with the NFL’s efforts to incentivize players to actively engage in the Pro Bowl games. Notably, even Pro Bowlers from the Chiefs and 49ers, who won’t participate due to Super Bowl preparations, will still receive a prize if their conference emerges victorious.

While the Pro Bowl prize money has consistently increased, the format changes have not significantly altered the bonus system. There is no indication that players receive prize money for winning skills competitions, emphasizing that the primary goal is the overall victory of the conference. Nevertheless, winning skills competitions serves as a strategic step toward achieving the coveted overall win.

The concept of Pro Bowl incentives traces back to 1971 when the winner received $2,000 and the losing side received $1,500. Over the years, the prize pool has seen several increases, reaching $10,000 in 1983, $20,000 in 1994, and continuing to rise annually in recent years. The consistent growth underscores the NFL’s dedication to sustaining player and fan interest in the Pro Bowl.

In the intricate playbook of NFL football, “play action” is a strategic offensive maneuver that adds a layer of deception to the game. This term refers to a specific type of play where the quarterback executes a fake handoff to a running back before launching a pass downfield. The art of play action is designed to outsmart the defense, creating opportunities for successful passes and keeping opponents off balance.

Deciphering Play Action

1. Deceptive Tactics:

Play action is a play-calling tactic that aims to deceive the opposing defense. By simulating a running play with a fake handoff, the quarterback tricks the defense into anticipating a ground attack. This split-second hesitation on the part of the defense creates openings for receivers to break free downfield.

2. Strategic Use:

Teams with potent running games often leverage play action to their advantage. The threat of a formidable running back can force defenders to commit to stopping the potential run, leaving the secondary vulnerable to a well-executed pass. Successful play-action keeps the defense guessing and creates opportunities for big plays in the passing game.

3. Execution of the Play:

During a play-action pass, the quarterback deftly executes a fake handoff after taking the snap. The goal is to make the defense believe it’s a running play, prompting linebackers and defensive backs to move closer to the line of scrimmage. With the defense momentarily fooled, the quarterback drops back and scans the field for an open receiver.

4. Critical Components:

The success of a play-action pass hinges on two critical components—the quarterback’s ability to convincingly sell the fake and the offensive line’s proficiency in blocking. A well-executed fake by the quarterback and the commitment of the offensive line to maintain the illusion of a running play contribute to the overall effectiveness of the tactic.

Strategic Impact

The strategic use of play action adds a dynamic element to an offense, especially for teams with powerful running backs. By introducing deception into the play-calling repertoire, teams can capitalize on the defense’s momentary confusion to create substantial gains in the passing game. Play action stands as a testament to the strategic depth and complexity embedded in NFL football, where every play is a chess move in the quest for offensive dominance.

In the intricate realm of NFL football, where every detail matters, the abbreviation “DNP” holds a specific significance—it stands for “Did Not Participate.” This designation is crucial, conveying that a player was absent from practice or a game due to various reasons, such as injury, illness, or other factors. Let’s explore the importance of the DNP designation in the NFL landscape, especially in the context of injury reports and its impact on fantasy football.

Unraveling the DNP Designation

1. Injuries and Absences:

The “Did Not Participate” (DNP) label comes into play when a player is unable to join the team for practice or a game due to factors like injuries, illnesses, or other unspecified reasons. This designation becomes particularly pertinent during the week leading up to a game when injury reports are released by NFL teams.

2. Injury Reports and Fantasy Football:

NFL teams routinely release injury reports throughout the week, providing crucial information about the health status of their players. The DNP designation serves as a key indicator in these reports, flagging players who were absent from practice on a given day. This information is invaluable for fantasy football managers who rely on these reports to make strategic decisions about their lineups.

3. Fantasy Football Impact:

Fantasy football is a game of strategy, and having accurate information about player availability is paramount for managers. When a player receives the DNP designation, it signals that they may be dealing with an injury or health issue, impacting their potential contribution to the upcoming game. Fantasy football managers use this information to make informed decisions about starting or benching players, and adjusting their lineups based on the availability of key contributors.

4. Lineup Adjustments:

Fantasy football success hinges on making smart decisions about starting players who are likely to perform well in a given week. The DNP designation aids managers in understanding the health status of their players, allowing them to adjust their lineups accordingly. If a star player receives a DNP due to injury, managers might consider alternative options to ensure their fantasy team remains competitive.

In NFL football, the DNP abbreviation serves as a critical marker, indicating that a player did not participate in practice or a game. Whether due to injuries, illnesses, or other reasons, the DNP designation carries significant weight in injury reports, providing essential insights for both NFL teams and fantasy football managers. As the season unfolds, the DNP status becomes a key factor in shaping lineup decisions and navigating the complexities of the NFL landscape.
