If tennis is your thing, you know this is a clash of generations, styles, and sheer willpower. So, what exactly can fans expect from this high-voltage encounter, and how do these two giants stack up head-to-head? Let’s see.

Novak Djokovic: The Man, The Myth, The Legend

First off, Novak Djokovic is the ultimate gladiator of tennis. At 38, he’s chasing an unprecedented 25th Grand Slam title, a feat that keeps him hungry and dangerous on the court. Djokovic’s journey through this tournament has been nothing short of masterful, beating top players like Taylor Fritz in four intense sets to reach the semis. His game, built on incredible defence, mental toughness, and pinpoint precision, has proven to be nearly untouchable, especially on hard courts. Djokovic has also never lost to Fritz and boasts an immaculate record on these grounds.

Carlos Alacarz: The Young Gun

On the other side, Carlos Alcaraz is the young maestro who has set the tennis world on fire. The 20-year-old Spaniard has been dominating in 2025, with six titles already under his belt and a staggering 58 wins from 64 matches this season. He’s a fierce competitor with lightning-fast footwork, aggressive shot-making, and the killer instinct of a future legend. At this US Open, Alcaraz has been cruising through opponents, including a recent dominant win over Jiri Lehecka, showing he’s in sensational form.

Djokovic vs Alcaraz: Head-To-Head Record

Looking at their head-to-head, Djokovic leads the rivalry 5-3. Their last encounter was in the Australian Open quarterfinals earlier this year, where Djokovic triumphed in four sets. While Djokovic holds the edge in experience and composure, Alcaraz’s youthful exuberance and fearless style bring unpredictability to the mix. Interestingly, this will be their first clash in New York, adding extra flair to the occasion.

What Can Fans Expect?

A classic tug-of-war with contrasting approaches. Djokovic’s legendary defensive skills and ability to absorb pressure will be tested by Alcaraz’s aggressive baseline play and blistering pace. The Serbian maestro’s experience in big moments versus Alcaraz’s hunger and raw talent will define the match. Expect long, gruelling rallies, sharp tactical shifts, and moments of sheer brilliance from both.

Physical conditioning will also play a crucial role. Djokovic has openly expressed hope that his body can hold up in these punishing conditions, while Alcaraz’s youthful energy could give him an edge in endurance. Mentally, Djokovic’s calmness under pressure often swings close matches in his favour, but Alcaraz’s fearless style has seen him overturn many tough situations this year.

One thing’s for sure, this isn’t just another match; it’s a battle for legacy.

Novak Djokovic has done it again. The Serbian legend has reached his record 14th Wimbledon semi-final, breaking Roger Federer’s previous record and showing the world, once more, why he’s considered one of the greatest to ever play the game. At 38, Djokovic is not just competing, he’s making history, and he’s making it look like business as usual.

A Battle Worthy of Centre Court

Novak Djokovic’s quarter-final against Italy’s Flavio Cobolli was anything but straightforward. The 23-year-old Cobolli, playing in his first Grand Slam quarter-final, came out swinging. He pushed Djokovic hard, taking the first set in a tense tiebreak 7-6 (8-6). The Italian’s drop shots and heavy groundstrokes had the Centre Court crowd buzzing, and for a moment, it looked like a major upset could be on the cards.

But Djokovic is Djokovic. He responded in classic style, breaking Cobolli twice in the second set to level the match. The third set was a nail-biter, with both players trading breaks, but Novak Djokovic pounced late to take it 7-5. In the fourth, Cobolli kept fighting, but a crucial missed volley at the net gave Djokovic the edge he needed. Even a scary slip while serving for the match couldn’t stop him; he got up, shook it off, and finished the job 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 after three hours and eleven minutes.

Novak Djokovic Setting New Records

This win is more than just another semi-final for Novak Djokovic. By reaching his 14th Wimbledon semi, he’s now the sole record-holder for most men’s singles semi-final appearances at the All England Club, moving past Federer’s 13. And that’s not all, he’s now tied Chris Evert for the most Grand Slam semi-final appearances in the Open Era with 52.

Novak Djokovic himself seemed to feel the significance. After the match, he said,

“It means the world to me that I’m still able at 38 to play the final stages of Wimbledon. Thank you for cheering for my age. I really appreciate it. It’s beautiful. Makes me feel very young.”

Even Queen Camilla was in the Royal Box, cheering him on, and British actor Hugh Grant was spotted enjoying the action, proof that when Djokovic plays, it’s not just a tennis match, it’s an event.

Eyes on the Prize

With this win, Novak Djokovic keeps his dream alive for a historic 25th Grand Slam title, which would break his tie with Margaret Court for the most major singles titles in history. He’s also within reach of Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles, another milestone that’s suddenly looking possible.

But it won’t be easy. Up next is world number one Jannik Sinner, who has beaten Djokovic in their last four meetings, including the French Open semi-final just last month. Sinner is in top form, and their showdown promises to be a blockbuster. Novak Djokovic knows it, too, saying,

“I had a nasty slip, but that’s what happens when you play on the grass. I’m going to visit this subject now with my physio, and hopefully I’ll be well in two days.”

However, if we compare it to the actual longest winning streaks in tennis, it might seem like the tip of the iceberg. While Alcaraz reached his milestone by winning the 15th game, the longest streak in the whole tennis world is 74 matches, held by Martina Navratilova.

In fact, it’s one of the very few records that is heavily dominated by women. The top 4 of the record is women, making it a legendary milestone. Discover the top 4 longest winning streaks in tennis I both men’s and women’s categories.

Martina Navratilova: 74 Matches (1984)

Martina Navratilova holds the record for the longest winning streaks in tennis. In 1984, she won 74 consecutive matches, a feat unmatched by any other player, male or female. Navratilova’s streak included victories across all surfaces and against the top competition of her era.

Steffi Graf: 66 Matches (1989–1990)

Steffi Graf, another icon of the sport, achieved the second longest winning streaks in tennis between 1989 and 1990. Graf’s run was marked by her dominance on both hard and clay courts, and she consistently outperformed her rivals, collecting multiple titles along the way. Her streak was 66 matches long, highlighting her extraordinary consistency and skill.

Martina Navratilova: 58 Matches (1986–1987)

Navratilova appears again in the top four of the longest winning streaks in tennis with her 58-match winning streak from 1986 to 1987. This run further demonstrates her sustained excellence and adaptability, as she continued to dominate the women’s game even after her record-setting 74-match streak.

Margaret Court: 57 Matches (1972–1973)

Margaret Court rounds out the top four with a 57-match winning streak achieved between 1972 and 1973. Court’s dominance during this period was unparalleled, and her ability to win consistently against the best players of her time makes it one of the longest winning streaks in tennis.

In a recent interview, Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion, revisited his traumatic experience from 2022, when his visa for the Australian Open was canceled. Detained in a Melbourne hotel, Djokovic claims he was poisoned by the food served during his five-day stay. While his statement sparked debate, experts suggest that food poisoning in such a setting is “possible but very unlikely.”

Novak Djokovic’s Poisoning Claim: Real or Exaggerated?

Djokovic stated that, after returning to Serbia, medical tests revealed “high levels of heavy metals” in his system, specifically lead and mercury. This led him to believe that the food served in his Melbourne detention may have been the cause.

However, experts like Damian Maganja from the George Institute for Global Health find this accusation “wild” due to the limited time Djokovic spent in detention. He pointed out that no other reports of food contamination had surfaced from that period, making the claim less credible.

Heavy Metals in Food: What Experts Say

Food contamination with heavy metals like mercury and lead is rare, especially in Australia. Dr. Barbara Cardoso, a nutritional biochemist from Monash University, explained that Australia’s exposure to lead and mercury is generally low. This is largely due to strict regulations phasing out lead from paint, petrol, and plumbing.

Djokovic, a vegan, likely consumed plant-based meals, which are less likely to be contaminated with mercury. “Mercury is mainly present in fish and shellfish,” said Cardoso, “and these foods are known to have minimal concentrations in Australia.”

Dr. Catharine Fleming, a public health expert, added that while food provision during the pandemic quarantine was poorly managed, connecting Djokovic’s symptoms to specific foods without clinical tests is challenging.

Djokovic’s Visa Saga and Public Reaction

Djokovic’s visa cancellation in 2022 caused international headlines. Initially barred from entering Australia for being unvaccinated, the decision was later reinforced by then-immigration minister Alex Hawke, citing potential risks to public health and social cohesion.

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios later criticized how his home country treated Djokovic, remarking, “we treated him like shit.” Kyrgios acknowledged that the visa situation was poorly handled, though he did not specifically comment on Djokovic’s poisoning claim.

Conclusions from Experts

While Djokovic’s claims have reignited debates, experts agree that the likelihood of food poisoning during his detention is slim. The lack of supporting clinical evidence, combined with the fact that Australia’s food safety measures are robust, make it improbable that Djokovic’s high metal levels originated from his brief stay in Melbourne.

Moving Forward: Djokovic’s Return to the Australian Open

As Djokovic prepares for the 2025 Australian Open, his experiences from 2022 continue to shape public opinion. While his poisoning claim may be unlikely, it underscores the stress and controversy surrounding his visa saga. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese declined to comment on the matter but wished Djokovic well in his upcoming tournament.

Novak Djokovic is currently battling through his knee injury, overcoming Taylor Fritz 6-4, 7-6 (8/6) to reach the Shanghai Masters final. In a much-anticipated final, Djokovic will face world number one Jannik Sinner, who secured his place by defeating Tomas Machac 6-4, 7-5 earlier.

Despite his knee troubles, Djokovic managed to break Fritz in the first set’s crucial fifth game, taking it in just 38 minutes. The second set, however, was much more intense, with both players pushing each other to their limits through thrilling rallies.

Djokovic acknowledged the difficulty of the match, calling it an “incredible fight.” He said, “He could have easily taken the second set… it was a real battle in the tiebreak, but I just didn’t give up.”

The second set lasted much longer, with Djokovic visibly struggling after a long fifth game, where Fritz had control for nearly 13 minutes. Djokovic was bent over, breathing heavily. Fritz missed his chance to break in the eighth game, allowing Djokovic to hold. Djokovic later took a medical time-out due to discomfort in his left knee, even though his right knee had been strapped throughout the tournament.

Despite these challenges, Djokovic’s resilience shone through. Down 3-5 in the tiebreak, he fought back and, helped by a series of unforced errors from Fritz, claimed victory.

Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner secured his place in the final by defeating Tomas Machac. The 23-year-old Italian, already confirmed to finish the year as the world number one, displayed his calm and collected approach throughout the match. Sinner fought back from an early break in the first set and won the second set with a crucial break in the final game.

Sinner expressed his joy at finishing the year on top of the rankings, saying, “It was a dream to become number one and to finish the year there is a completely different feeling. It’s been an incredible season, but it’s not over yet.”

The stage is now set for an exciting final between Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, and Sinner, who is enjoying a standout year at the top of the tennis world.

NEW YORK: Defending champion Novak Djokovic achieved his 90th win at the U.S. Open on Wednesday. He defeated fellow Serb Laslo Djere, who retired in the third set during their second-round match.

Djokovic, who has won the tournament four times and is chasing a record 25th Grand Slam title, was leading 6-4, 6-4, 2-0 when Djere retired.

Djere, ranked 109th, had required a medical timeout to address an injury just before losing the second set. Djokovic, 37, also needed treatment for what seemed to be a side strain after winning the first set.

Novak Djokovic’s Record Achievement

Djokovic, currently the world number two, is now the only player to have won 90 matches at all four Grand Slam tournaments.

“It’s disappointing to see a match end with a retirement. Laslo had an injury that kept him off the tour for a while, and he’s been struggling to come back,” Djokovic said.

“Laslo is a strong player in these conditions, and he was leading 4-2 in the second set. Maybe my winning the second set added pressure on him.”

Djokovic will face Australia’s Alexei Popyrin next. They have met twice this year, with Djokovic winning both encounters in four sets at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Popyrin is in excellent form, having won the Montreal Masters just before the U.S. Open.

“Alexei is getting closer and is knocking on the door,” Djokovic remarked about the world number 28, who has reached the last 32 in New York for the third time.

“We always knew he had a strong serve, but now he’s more consistent and makes fewer mistakes. He’s playing some impressive tennis.”

The Serbian professional tennis player has clinched a total of ten Australian Open titles (2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2023), three French Open titles (2016, 2021 and 2023), five US Open titles (2011,2015, 2018 and 2023) and a phenomenal second-highest total of seven Wimbledon men’s singles titles (2011, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022), speaking volumes about his dominance on the game. Additionally, as of 2024, Novak Djokovic is the only tennis player to complete a “career golden master” and a triple career grand slam.

In this article, we will take a look at the top five secrets of Novak Djokovic behind his illustrious tennis career

Novak Djokovic’s ‘Secret’ Diet

Although the tennis stalwart is hailed by millions of fans around the globe, a majority of them are not aware of the fact that Novak Djokovic is extremely particular about what he consumes. In one of his recent interviews, Novak Djokovic revealed that he strictly follows a “gluten-free” diet and consumes only plant-based and organic foods. For those who don’t know, Novak Djokovic’s parents own a pizzeria, therefore to adopt a “gluten-free” diet took a lot of extra effort and discipline for him.

Novak Djokovic’s day typically starts with a warm glass of water with lemon that helps him in detoxifying his body and keeping him fresh, and a few staples of Novak Djokovic’s healthy diet during the day includes chickpeas, beans, white meat, vegetables, lentils and fish. Novak Djokovic’s healthy bowl includes berries, strawberries, yogurt, banana and gluten-free muesli followed with a healthy smoothie and celery juice. Novak Djokovic is also fond of carrot and ginger soup and consumes it along with his evening snack, chopped apple with cashew butter.

Novak Djokovic’s Fitness Regime

Contrary to the hardcore workout sessions, the Serbian tennis star, Novak Djokovic sticks to Yoga and Pilates in order to improve and boost his physical flexibility, build his muscles stronger and avoid any serious injuries while training and playing hardcore tennis games. In one of his interviews, Novak Djokovic revealed that his motivation for hitting the gym is “stronger muscles” and not getting too bulky. Novak Djokovic’s fitness regime that includes butt kicks, high knees, arm circles, in-and-out hops and fast-paced running is focused on making him last longer on the tennis court against his opposition with unwavering strength and agility.

Novak Djokovic’s Mental Health Regime

While Novak Djokovic has been praised by millions of fans from around the world, he has also been criticized for his poor performance in crucial matches due to injuries. In order to keep himself sane, Novak Djokovic practices meditation and mindfulness exercises on a regular basis. While Djokovic’s physical fitness regimes train him to be dominant and consistent on the tennis court, his dedication towards meditation keeps him mentally strong and focused on the game without getting overwhelmed by a great deal of appreciation or brutal criticism.

Novak Djokovic’s Pre-Match Diet

As mentioned earlier, Novak Djokovic is extremely strict and particular about his gluten-free and sugar-free diet. He avoids all sorts of junk food and also ensures to consume food that keeps him energetic throughout his intense matches on the tennis court. Novak Djokovic consumes lean meat and whole grains before his match and stays adequately hydrated, which helps him significantly in the post-match recovery routine.

Novak Djokovic’s “Secret” Conditioning

While you must have seen athletes rigorously indulging in stretching and other workouts just before their matches in order to maintain their fitness and agility in their sports forms, Novak Djokovic has an unpopular habit of training in the mountains at higher altitudes to build his endurance. The Serbian tennis player recently revealed in an interview that activities like hiking in high-altitude areas help him increase his endurance to the maximum level possible. Since the tennis stalwart hails from the land of Serbia, there’s no doubt why mountains and high-altitude areas motivate him to achieve more and more.

What is a walkover in tennis?

Iga Swiatek (AP Photo/Alberto Pezzali)

Walkovers are quite common in tennis due to the short turnaround between matches and the demanding schedule. The term is commonly used when a player withdraws before the start of a match. Doing so in the middle of a match is referred to as retirement.

To play the scheduled match, a lucky loser is called to replace a player who withdraws before their first-round match. However, when this occurs in the later rounds, a player advances to the following round without taking a single shot.

Aside from Novak Djokovic’s walkover against de Minaur, there has only been one other instance of it this Wimbledon season. Lucas Pouille retired earlier to their third-round encounter with an injury, thus the Australian benefited from it.

While only a few walkovers have been granted at Wimbledon this year, there have been numerous mid-match retirements throughout the event. Madison Keys was on the verge of triumph in her fourth-round match against Jasmine Paolini but had to call it quits at 5-5 in the third set.

Grigor Dimitrov was unable to complete the first set of his fourth-round match against Daniil Medvedev and was forced to withdraw at 5-3. Other players who retired from the competition included Anna Kalinskaya, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, Camila Osorio, Thanasi Kokkinakis, and Hubert Hurkacz.

Novak Djokovic to face either Taylor Fritz or Lorenzo Musetti in the Wimbledon semifinals

A walkover was hardly how Djokovic envisioned himself reaching the Wimbledon semifinals. Nonetheless, he would be pleased to be another step closer to a 25th Major title. He could face Taylor Fritz or Lorenzo Musetti next.

The Serb leads Fritz 9-0 in their head-to-head matchup and also has a 5-1 advantage over Musetti. He will be the clear favourite to defeat either of them and advance to another final at the All-England Club.

If Djokovic makes it to the summit, he might face Carlos Alcaraz in a rematch from last year’s final. Daniil Medvedev, on the other hand, has the potential to play spoiler and eliminate the Spaniard to reach the final. In any case, the championship round promises to be entertaining.
