Eight players feature on the list of nominees for the Player of the Month award for the August edition. 

With seven goals in just three games, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland is an obvious contender. With a goal against Chelsea, followed by hat-tricks against Ipswich Town and West Ham United, the Norwegian has enjoyed the greatest goal scoring start to a season in the history of the Premier League.

Bryan Mbeumo scored three goals in three games.  Marking a decent season start for Brentford, Mbeumo scored against Crystal Palace before putting two past Southampton.

New signing Amadou Onana has made an immediate impact with Aston Villa. Wins over West Ham and Leicester City were inspired by his goals as Villa carried on  their strong form from last season.

Cole Palmer gave a dominating performance in a 6-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, netting a glorious lob and setting up all three of Noni Madueke’s goals.

The only team with two nominees this month is Arsenal. David Raya had two clean sheets and two outrageous saves to deny Jorgen Strand Larsen and Ollie Watkins, while Bukayo Saka earned a spot with one goal and three assists. 

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah made a strong start to the season bagging two goals and an assist from the first two games helping his side produce a perfect start to the campaign.

Brighton’s new  manager Fabian Hurzeler who is 31-year-old, have five players in his sqaud who are older than him.  His side beat Everton and Manchester United before battling to a 1-1 draw with Arsenal.

The Premier League have cleared Chelsea’s £76.5million sale of two hotels to a sister company, thus allowing the club to comply with the league’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

The Millennium and Copthorne hotels were sold by Chelsea FC Holdings Ltd to BlueCo 22 Properties Ltd in June 2023. Both companies are ultimately owned by BlueCo 22 Ltd, which is Chelsea’s holding company.

The deal meant Chelsea made a loss of £89.9m instead of £166.4m in their 2022/23 accounts.

Premier League rules allow clubs to accumulate losses of up to £105m over a three-year period, or £35m per year, on a rolling basis. These losses do not include investments in youth development, women’s football, and infrastructure.

Chelsea’s compliance with the said rules were previously questioned, due to the company’s’ £89.9m loss in the 2022/23 financial year. This loss would have been £166.4m had it not been for the sale of the Millennium and Copthorne hotels from Chelsea FC Holdings Ltd to BlueCo 22 Properties Ltd.

 As per Premier League’s Associated Party Transactions (APT) rules, a club must be considered to be “at fair market value”. If a club conducts such a deal that is not not deemed to be at fair value, they could be liable to sanctions by the league, after Premier League clubs voted to toughen rules on said transactions in March.

As such, many of Chelsea’s rivals in the Premier League had reportedly questioned the validity of such sales. Chelsea was alleged to have breached both APT and PSR rules, which could have invited financial sanction or points deduction.

However,  the hotel sales have now been reviewed by the Premier League, and the fees were found to be within an acceptable margin to their estimated market values had they been sold to another buyer. Now, the club are confident in complying with PSR regulations in the 2024/25 financial year and the previous seasons.

Mohamed Salah  has said he could be playing his last season at Liverpool, adding that “nobody has talked to me” about renewing his contract with the Reds.

The statement from Salah came after Liverpool’s thumping 3-0 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford.  The Egyptian assisted both goals and scored his side’s third in the 56th minute. 

“It could be the last time”

Liverpool’s comprehensive win against United and Salah’s brilliant performance were, however, overshadowed by the striker’s statements.  

“I had a good summer and had a long time to myself to try to stay positive because as you know it’s my last year at the club, he said”

“Coming into the game, I said it could be the last time (I play here with Liverpool).

Mohamed Salah said he is still yet to make up his mind on his future course of footballing career. 

“I just want to enjoy it and I don’t want to think about it. I feel like I’m free to play football and then we’ll see what happens next year.”

Salah’s hints that he might leave the club comes from the fact that his contract with Liverpool expires this summer and the management has not communicated to him regarding a potential renewal. 

“No-one at the club has spoken to me about contracts, so I’m just like, ‘OK, I’m playing my last season’ and see what happens at the end of the season.

When asked about Salah’s comments, Liverpool manager Arne Slot said, “It’s a lot of ‘if’. At this moment he is one of ours and I am really happy with him being one of ours and he played really well.”

“I don’t talk about contracts from players but I can talk for hours about how Mo played today.”

In July 2022, Mohammed Salah signed a new three-year deal with the Reds, reportedly making him the highest paid player in the club’s history, at more than £350,000 a week.

Earlier, Liverpool rejected a £150m offer from Saudi club Al-Ittihad for Salah last September.

The Egypt national football team captain had  joined the Reds for £34m from AS Roma in 2017 has made 253 appearances for Liverpool since then, scoring 158 goals. 

In the Premier League, Manchester City will host Ipswich Town at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. Last week, the hosts started their title defence with a win, while the visitors lost their first game in the top division.

In their first home game of the season, the Citizens will try to build on their successful start to the league last week. Their last home loss in the Premier League came in November 2022, and they finished the previous season undefeated.

Savinho is questionable after taking a knock last week and being substituted off at the interval, while Oscar Bobb is still out for the foreseeable future. Pep Guardiola is unlikely to have Rodri available because he missed the first game of the season.

The Tractor Boys’ toughest test of the season will come this week as they take on Liverpool. They only managed two shots on goal, so they will try to break that mark. It is concerning that they have only won once in their last 14 league games.

Six players, including City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who is on loan, are confirmed to be out of the match for Kieran McKenna. Uncertain and up for a late fitness test is Arijanet Muric.

Given the two clubs’ recent performance, City is predicted to win easily, and there is a good chance they will keep a clean sheet as well.
