SiGMA Europe kicks off with exclusive affiliate retreat in Morocco

From November 7th to 9th, 2024, 50 VIP affiliates are being treated to an exclusive, all-inclusive experience at the chic Pestana CR7 Hotel, blending Moroccan culture, luxury, and networking in a three-day affiliate retreat that underscores SiGMA Europe’s reputation for fostering “friends before business” connections.

Michael Corfman, CEO at Casino City Press, emphasised this, saying, “I think it’s important to have friends in the industry. It’s become very commercial over time and so I think it’s good to get back to the roots of being friends with each other.”

This retreat arrives just ahead of Malta Week 2024, an eagerly awaited industry highlight that will attract over 27,000 delegates and more than 1,000 sponsors and exhibitors, setting a new standard for the gaming community. Known for its substantial business opportunities and collaborative ethos, SiGMA Europe has long been a magnet for industry leaders and innovators.

Speaking to SiGMA about her expectations of the event, Milica Kasapovic, Affiliate Team Lead from Gentoo Media said, “As an affiliate I’m expecting to meet people from the industry and present the newest acquisitions from Gentoo Media, Mr Cashback, Casino Meister and to present our other flagship brands like Ask Gamblers and Casino Tops Online.” 

Supported by 22bet, Boomerang.Partners,  G.Partners,  KNG Partners, Wikibet, StayPartners, and Wicked Games, the retreat’s opening day offered affiliates a taste of Marrakech’s rich cultural heritage with a private lunch at Café Arabe, an iconic spot in the heart of the Medina. This rooftop setting allowed attendees to enjoy traditional Moroccan cuisine against the backdrop of Marrakech’s historic cityscape. The relaxed ambiance fostered genuine connections among delegates, setting a collaborative tone for the days to follow.

As evening fell, the group gathered at Lola Sky Lounge for sunset networking. With the city stretching out below, delegates mingled as the sun dipped below the horizon, a relaxed yet elegant gathering marking the perfect end to the first day, and offering both breatht aking views and an ideal environment for strengthening relationships within the community.

The second day began with an early morning adventure high above Morocco’s landscape: a sunrise hot air balloon ride. Attendees enjoyed panoramic views of Berber villages and the towering Atlas Mountains, followed by a breakfast set in the tranquillity of the desert. 

The action continued in the Agafay Desert, a stark and beautiful expanse known for its white sandy dunes. Affiliates had the option of taking a thrilling ride on quad bikes and sand buggies or enjoying a serene camel ride through the desert. 

A refreshing lunch awaited the group at La Bohème, where delegates could recharge poolside before the evening’s festivities. The laid-back atmosphere provided a serene space to reflect on the day’s adventures and continue conversations sparked by the morning’s escapades.

Speaking to SiGMA, Bertam Baytekin, CEO and Founder of Protipster, said, “It’s good to connect with people who are doing the same thing, and at the same time everyone is unique and we are having amazing conversations. I´ve learned things about people that I couldn’t have imagined.”

As the retreat draws to a close, affiliates gather for a celebratory dinner at Epicurien, filled with Moroccan flavours and great company. The festivities continued with casino games, allowing attendees to indulge in friendly competition before dancing the night away at Theatro nightclub. Tomorrow the group will explore the city’s famous souks before flying back to Malta to attend SiGMA Europe – which runs from the 11th to 15th.

In examining the social and psychological benefits of gaming, Thomason shared insights into how gaming can alleviate stress, enhance cognitive flexibility, and even foster community. Yet, she was also candid about the need for moderation, especially given the addictive design elements embedded in many popular games. Highlighting a proactive approach to health in gaming, Thomason remarked, “It would be brilliant and enormously beneficial if gaming would get people to move their bodies,” underscoring the potential for integrating physical wellness within gaming experiences.

Participants left the masterclass with a deeper understanding of how gaming can be a positive mental health tool when approached thoughtfully. Through group discussions, they formed a supportive network for exchanging strategies, paving the way for healthier engagement with digital entertainment.

He emphasized that Malta stands at a pivotal moment where the decisions made today will profoundly impact the future, determining the sector’s readiness for upcoming challenges and opportunities.

Balancing sustainability with growth

Mizzi highlighted that the key to the long-term sustainability of Malta’s gaming sector lies in achieving balance. He stressed that Malta’s gaming industry has thrived by cultivating an ecosystem where regulation and innovation coexist, building a jurisdiction that’s both trusted and attractive to some of the world’s most successful operators.

“The key to the long-term sustainability of Malta´s gaming sector is balance. Balance between continuity and innovation, regulation and growth, and ultimately, sustainable progress and industry stability,” emphasised Mizzi.

Malta was one of the first movers in regulating gaming, setting up an ecosystem that has earned a respected global reputation. However, Mizzi warned that the industry cannot remain static if it wants to retain its competitive edge. Enhancing regulatory resilience, streamlining licensing processes, and providing stability and clarity for operators are all essential steps to foster an attractive, transparent jurisdiction that aligns with global business standards.

Mizzi outlined that the MGA’s approach to innovation includes a tech-neutral stance, a commitment to monitoring trends, and collaboration with experts to anticipate future demands. The MGA’s ability to adapt quickly to emerging challenges will ensure Malta continues to offer a strong, flexible regulatory framework.

The MGA has pioneered the integration of innovative technologies within the gaming sector, including early adoption of crypto payments, blockchain applications, and smart contracts. Mizzi emphasized that the adoption of new technologies isn’t just an option; it’s a necessity for Malta to stay ahead. By addressing potential risks early and evolving as technology progresses, Malta’s gaming sector has established itself as a leader rather than responding to perceived threats.

The Growing Importance of ESG in Malta’s gaming industry

Mizzi underscored that environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations are shaping the future of Malta’s gaming industry. ESG practices are now central to the sector’s long-term resilience, moving beyond mere regulatory compliance. He explained that by proactively addressing ESG, companies can reduce risks, establish a strong foundation for growth, and enhance their market reputation. Younger consumers, in particular, value responsible business practices, making ESG a key driver for attracting investment and fostering trust across the industry.

To support this, the MGA has invited companies to submit ESG disclosures under a new code of good practice. This strategic roadmap includes a tiered approach to ESG standards, with a foundational “Tier 1” and an aspirational “Tier 2” for more experienced operators. Recently, the MGA awarded its first voluntary ESG Code of Good Practice approval to 14 licensees, furthering Malta’s reputation for responsible, transparent business practices.

Outreach and Engagement through MGA Reach

As part of its efforts to build an inclusive and resilient gaming sector, the MGA has launched initiatives like MGA Reach, aimed at fostering engagement and knowledge sharing within the industry. Through collaboration and ongoing dialogue with stakeholders, Mizzi emphasized that the MGA is committed to leading Malta’s gaming industry into a sustainable, innovative, and globally competitive future.
