Novak Djokovic has done it again. The Serbian legend has reached his record 14th Wimbledon semi-final, breaking Roger Federer’s previous record and showing the world, once more, why he’s considered one of the greatest to ever play the game. At 38, Djokovic is not just competing, he’s making history, and he’s making it look like business as usual.

A Battle Worthy of Centre Court

Novak Djokovic’s quarter-final against Italy’s Flavio Cobolli was anything but straightforward. The 23-year-old Cobolli, playing in his first Grand Slam quarter-final, came out swinging. He pushed Djokovic hard, taking the first set in a tense tiebreak 7-6 (8-6). The Italian’s drop shots and heavy groundstrokes had the Centre Court crowd buzzing, and for a moment, it looked like a major upset could be on the cards.

But Djokovic is Djokovic. He responded in classic style, breaking Cobolli twice in the second set to level the match. The third set was a nail-biter, with both players trading breaks, but Novak Djokovic pounced late to take it 7-5. In the fourth, Cobolli kept fighting, but a crucial missed volley at the net gave Djokovic the edge he needed. Even a scary slip while serving for the match couldn’t stop him; he got up, shook it off, and finished the job 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 after three hours and eleven minutes.

Novak Djokovic Setting New Records

This win is more than just another semi-final for Novak Djokovic. By reaching his 14th Wimbledon semi, he’s now the sole record-holder for most men’s singles semi-final appearances at the All England Club, moving past Federer’s 13. And that’s not all, he’s now tied Chris Evert for the most Grand Slam semi-final appearances in the Open Era with 52.

Novak Djokovic himself seemed to feel the significance. After the match, he said,

“It means the world to me that I’m still able at 38 to play the final stages of Wimbledon. Thank you for cheering for my age. I really appreciate it. It’s beautiful. Makes me feel very young.”

Even Queen Camilla was in the Royal Box, cheering him on, and British actor Hugh Grant was spotted enjoying the action, proof that when Djokovic plays, it’s not just a tennis match, it’s an event.

Eyes on the Prize

With this win, Novak Djokovic keeps his dream alive for a historic 25th Grand Slam title, which would break his tie with Margaret Court for the most major singles titles in history. He’s also within reach of Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles, another milestone that’s suddenly looking possible.

But it won’t be easy. Up next is world number one Jannik Sinner, who has beaten Djokovic in their last four meetings, including the French Open semi-final just last month. Sinner is in top form, and their showdown promises to be a blockbuster. Novak Djokovic knows it, too, saying,

“I had a nasty slip, but that’s what happens when you play on the grass. I’m going to visit this subject now with my physio, and hopefully I’ll be well in two days.”

However, if we compare it to the actual longest winning streaks in tennis, it might seem like the tip of the iceberg. While Alcaraz reached his milestone by winning the 15th game, the longest streak in the whole tennis world is 74 matches, held by Martina Navratilova.

In fact, it’s one of the very few records that is heavily dominated by women. The top 4 of the record is women, making it a legendary milestone. Discover the top 4 longest winning streaks in tennis I both men’s and women’s categories.

Martina Navratilova: 74 Matches (1984)

Steffi Graf: 66 Matches (1989–1990)

Steffi Graf, another icon of the sport, achieved the second longest winning streaks in tennis between 1989 and 1990. Graf’s run was marked by her dominance on both hard and clay courts, and she consistently outperformed her rivals, collecting multiple titles along the way. Her streak was 66 matches long, highlighting her extraordinary consistency and skill.

Martina Navratilova: 58 Matches (1986–1987)

Navratilova appears again in the top four of the longest winning streaks in tennis with her 58-match winning streak from 1986 to 1987. This run further demonstrates her sustained excellence and adaptability, as she continued to dominate the women’s game even after her record-setting 74-match streak.

Margaret Court: 57 Matches (1972–1973)

Margaret Court rounds out the top four with a 57-match winning streak achieved between 1972 and 1973.
Boxing had Ali vs. Frazier in 1974. Soccer had Italy vs. West Germany in 1970. American Football had Super Bowl 51. If we were to list every sporting contest that saw the greatest game ever, we’d be here all day. The beauty of watching sports is the unpredictability. Sometimes you’ll see a boring game, but other times, you’ll witness an edge-of-your-seat showdown that could go down in history as one of the greatest sporting moments. Tennis is a sport that has not only created some incredible players but also some amazing matches. While everyone has their own opinion on the best tennis match, some are universally recognized as among the greatest.

Here’s a look at the five unforgettable tennis matches of all time

Tennis

5. Pete Sampras vs. Andre Agassi – US Open Quarter Final, 2001

In the 1990s, Sampras and Agassi were the top players in tennis, known for their rivalry and different playing styles. Agassi was aggressive and explosive, while Sampras was calm and calculated. Despite both being past their prime, their 2001 US Open Quarter Final match was unforgettable. All four sets went to tie-breaks, with Sampras’ impressive serve helping him win three out of four without a single break. Sampras eventually triumphed, and both men received a standing ovation from the enthusiastic crowd.

4. Suzanne Lenglen vs. Helen Wills – Cannes, France, 1926

Suzanne Lenglen and Helen Wills were the most dominant female tennis players of their era, but they only played each other once. This match at the Cannes, France, Carlton Club Final had an incredible atmosphere, with fans sitting in trees and on rooftops to watch. Wills took an early 3-1 lead, but Lenglen, after a glass of cognac, staged a comeback. Despite some controversy with the crowd, Lenglen won 6-3, 8-6.

3. Roger Federer vs. Andy Roddick – Wimbledon Final, 2009

In the 2000s, Roger Federer seemed unbeatable, making people root for the underdog, Andy Roddick. Their 2009 Wimbledon Final match was competitive until the final set, where Roddick lost his serve just once. Despite setting the record for the most games won in a Wimbledon final at age 39, Roddick couldn’t overcome Federer, who again proved to be a thorn in Roddick’s side. This match had a “Rocky” feel to it, with fans hoping for an underdog victory, but it didn’t end happily ever after.

2. Bjorn Borg vs. John McEnroe – Wimbledon Final, 1980

No list of the greatest tennis matches is complete without Bjorn Borg vs. John McEnroe in the 1980 Wimbledon Final. This match is widely considered the greatest tennis rivalry of all time. Borg was cool and calm, while McEnroe was loud and hot-headed, making for compelling viewing. The fourth-set tie-breaker, often considered the most dramatic in tennis, saw McEnroe fend off numerous match points and Borg survive several set points. Borg eventually won the fifth set 8-6, securing his fifth consecutive Wimbledon title. McEnroe would beat Borg in the finals a year later.

1. Roger Federer vs. Rafael Nadal – Wimbledon Final, 2008

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have both featured heavily on this list due to their incredible talent. Their 2008 Wimbledon Final is widely considered the greatest professional tennis match ever. Federer had won the last five Wimbledon titles, defeating Nadal in 2006 and 2007. At the time, the two players had won 14 of the last 16 Grand Slam titles. Nadal, known as the ‘King of Clay,’ wanted revenge, while Federer, the ‘King of Grass,’ aimed to build his legacy. Despite being the favorite, Federer lost to Nadal after an intense match that lasted 4 hours and 48 minutes, interrupted twice by rain. Under a dark London sky, Federer finished with 89 winners but still lost.
