A whirlwind of athletic competition, national pride and construction. hosting the Olympics can be a massive undertaking for a city. But beyond the dazzling stadiums and cheering crowds these Games often spark a wave of urban renewal, completely revamping a city’s landscape. Let’s dive into how cities transform to become Olympic-worthy.

Building a Stage for Champions

First things first the Olympics need places for athletes to compete. This means brand new stadiums, swimming pools and velodromes might pop up. Often these facilities are grouped in an Olympic Park creating a dedicated zone for the Games. But these venues are not just temporary. Many are designed to be used after the Olympics for concerts, sporting events or even to be converted into community centers.

Getting Around Like a Gold Medalist

Thousands of athletes tourists and officials descend on the host city during the Olympics. To handle this influx transportation gets a major upgrade. Cities might expand their subway systems build new bus lines or create dedicated lanes for athletes to zip around. This improved infrastructure is not just for the Games – it leaves a lasting legacy that benefits residents long after the final whistle blows.

Also Read: Why are the Olympic Games held after every four years?

From Brownfields to Gold Fields

Sometimes, Olympic bids target neglected areas of a city. Think abandoned factories or unused warehouses. These brownfields get a complete makeover and are transformed into sparkling new Olympic Villages – housing for athletes during the Games. But these villages don’t become ghost towns after the closing ceremony. Often, they are converted into affordable housing or vibrant mixed-use developments with apartments, shops and parks.

Shining a Light on the City

The Olympics put a global spotlight on the host city. Cities take this opportunity to spruce up public spaces plant new trees and create a more welcoming environment. This can lead to improved parks cleaner streets and a renewed focus on sustainability with investments in green technology and renewable energy.

Of course, there are challenges. Building Olympic infrastructure can be expensive, and some residents might be displaced by development projects. But done right the Olympics can be a catalyst for positive change leaving a city with a modern makeover and a bright future. So the next time you watch the Games, remember – there was a whole city story behind those awe-inspiring athletic achievements.

The British tennis legend announced on Tuesday (July 2) that he would not compete in the singles event at the All England Club due to inadequate recovery from spinal cyst surgery, despite being scheduled to face Tomas Machac in the first round. Andy Murray decided he was not ready to play singles shortly after surgery to remove a cyst on his spin.

However, fans will still see Andy Murray in action as he teams up with his brother Jamie for the doubles tournament, which could be his final appearance at Wimbledon. Murray has indicated plans to hang up his racket post-Paris Olympics, provided his fitness allows him to compete.

On Wednesday, the England club announced there would be at least one match and one chance for fans to see Andy Murray at Wimbledon Grass Court.

The All England Club announced on Wednesday that Andy Murray and 2021 U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu have been awarded a wild-card entry for mixed doubles, giving fans at least one more chance to see him play at the tournament with which he is most closely associated.

“I will make the most of it,” Andy Murray said of his farewell to Wimbledon, the grass-court Grand Slam tournament where he won titles in 2013 and 2016, the first of which made him the first British man to win in singles at the All England Club in 77 years. “It is easier said than done to enjoy yourself when you are out there because you are competing and concentrating to win the match.”

One would imagine that the viewers would simply enjoy watching, regardless of the outcome.

Brother Jamie Murray on Andy Murray’s Retirement

Jamie Murray and Andy Murray (Photo: X)

“Most people already have ideas and opinions about him, what he represents to them, and what he brings to the tennis court. More than anything else, his determination is likely to take precedence over most other considerations. Jamie Murray described him as having a “refuse-to-lose” attitude. ” In this country, he took a lot of people along for the ride on a journey with him over the last 15 years.”

Andy Murray has stated that he plans to retire after the Paris Olympics, which will be held at Roland Garros, the site of the French Open, and begin on July 27.

The fact that he declared his retirement in 2019—a year after his first hip surgery and just before his second—and that a ceremony and tribute video were played following Murray’s first-round defeat at the Australian Open in January are points of contention for detractors. Naturally, he came back, performing on a prosthetic hip.

“You never know.” He might return next year. I do not know,” said Katie Boulter, a British player seeded 32nd in the women’s bracket. “Never say ‘never’ with Andy.”

Achievements of Andy Murray

Achievements of Andy Murray

Andy Murray has many accomplishments. Three Grand Slam titles, including the 2012 U.S. Open. The year-end number one ranking in 2016. The only tennis player with more than one Olympic singles title, he won two gold medals in a row at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics.

He became Britain’s most significant tennis player in decades, earning enormous popularity and a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II, while also remaining an outspoken statesman in his sport, expressing views on a variety of issues, particularly those affecting women. His hiring of Amelie Mauresmo as his coach was groundbreaking.

“He is the best role model for any British tennis player, particularly a Scottish player like myself. ” I watched him grow up,” said Jacob Fearnley, a singles wild card who will face 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic on Centre Court on Thursday. “The way he climbed the rankings, the way he competes, the way he plays—it is very special to see.”

Coco Gauff, last year’s US Open champion, and other female players have recently spoken out about Murray’s support for women in the sport.

Gauff recalled a viral video of Andy Murray speaking at a Wimbledon news conference in 2017 when a reporter referred to Sam Querrey as “the first American player to reach the semifinals of a Slam since 2009,” and Murray interrupted to point out that Querrey was the first “male player” from the United States to do so in that period, even though plenty of women had done so.

“I do appreciate him. Not only him but also his mother, for everything they’ve done for equality in women’s sports,” Gauff said.

As for Murray, the athlete, Gauff mentioned a quality that plenty of others did, too.

“I believe his legacy is that he is simply a fighter.” The most inspiring thing about him is that no matter where he plays, whether it is (at a low-level event) or Centre Court here, he gives it his all,” she said. “It is unfortunate he could not get one more healthy (singles) match out here because I believe he deserves to end his career on his terms. I hope the doubles go well. He is a sports icon. “He has had an incredible career that many people dream of.”

The Spaniard, who is just 21 years old, is chasing his fourth Grand Slam championship and aspires to become only the sixth person to win the French Open and Wimbledon back-to-back.

“He played a really good match, and he obviously surprised me a little because I hadn’t seen him play much,” Alcaraz said after the event began on Centre Court.

This time last year, Lajal was losing a first-round match at a second-tier Challenger event in the United States for $780; on Monday, he earned $75,000.

Jannik Sinner’s Performance Analysis

Sinner survived a mid-match wobble to defeat Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, setting up a meeting against other 2021 finalist and compatriot Matteo Berrettini.

“He played really well, he was serving well, and I missed a couple of shots,” said Sinner, who reached the semi-finals last year.

Andy Murray Farewell Tournament

Murray, the 2013 and 2016 Wimbledon champion, was scheduled to decide whether or not to play singles at his farewell tournament.

The former world number one had surgery to remove a cyst on his spine last week and stated that he still hasn’t entirely recovered feeling in his leg.

Murray will now choose on Tuesday, with schedulers assigning him the final slot on Centre Court for his match against Tomas Machac to give him extra time to think about it.

Aryna Sabalenka’s Wimbledon Withdrawal Announcement

Aryna Sabalenka (Photo: Adam/Getty Images)

Sabalenka, a two-time Wimbledon semi-finalist and world number three, is one of eight players to withdraw since the draw was released.

She revealed she wasn’t fully fit after sustaining a shoulder injury at the Berlin Open.

“Heartbroken to have to tell you all that I won’t be able to play in the championships this year,” Sabalenka, 26, posted on X.

Zheng Qinwen, China’s world number eight and runner-up at the Australian Open, was the greatest casualty of the day, losing in the first round for the second consecutive year.

Zheng lost 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 to New Zealand qualifier Lulu Sun, who won her maiden Grand Slam match.

Sabalenka and Zheng were prospective semi-final opponents for US Open champion and second-ranked Coco Gauff, who defeated compatriot Caroline Dolehide 6-1, 6-2.

Naomi Osaka, the former world number one, won Wimbledon for the first time since 2018, coming back from a breakdown in the last set to defeat Diane Parry of France 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.

Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam winner, hit 34 winners in the tie, which was clinched when Parry served her tenth double fault.

The victory was extremely significant for Osaka because it came the day before her daughter Shai’s first birthday.

“It feels like a dream because I haven’t played here many times,” said Osaka, who last played at the All England Club in 2019, when she was eliminated in the first round.

Daniil Medvedev’s Dominance at Wimbledon

Daniil Medvedev, Russia’s fifth seed and last year’s semi-finalist, smashed 16 aces in his 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Aleksandar Kovacevic of the United States.

“I’ve still never lost on Court One, so hopefully I can play a lot more matches on this court,” Medvedev explained.

“Last year I said it was unfortunate I had to go to Center Court for the semis, and I lost.”

Casper Ruud’s Health Struggles

Eighth seed Casper Ruud defeated Australia’s Alex Bolt in straight sets, revealing that he had been brought low by a parasite since reaching the French Open semi-finals.

“I was mostly in bed for 10–11 days, which was not what I was kind of hoping for,” the man from Norway stated.

Stan Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, defeated British wild card Charles Broom 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 in his Wimbledon debut at age 39.

On the Roehampton courts, 128 players will compete for one of 16 qualifying spots in the main draw as well as a guaranteed 60,000-pound check in prize money.

In 1999, American Alexandra Stevenson advanced to the main draw and reached the semifinals. Is it possible for someone to accomplish the same feat this year, or maybe emulate Emma Raducanu’s successful Grand Slam qualifying career?

Let’s have a look at five players to watch out for at Wimbledon 2024 Women’s Singles Qualifiers

1. Amanda Anisimova

Amanda Anisimova (Getty Images: Robert Prange)

Amanda Anisimova is one of the most natural ball strikers in women’s tennis. The American strikes the ball with a combination of effortlessness and force.

Even at the young age of 22, Anisimova has already experienced both the highs and lows of the game, including the death of her father and taking a year off from competition due to burnout and mental health issues. Her highs include two WTA titles, a quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon, and a French Open semi-final.

The American returned to the tour in January after an eight-month absence and advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open. Although Anisimova is only 6-7 for the season, she is a player to watch at Roehampton because of her much more balanced approach to life and her job.

In the first round, she faces Greek player Valentini Grammatikopoulou in the second round, she might face fourth seed Hailey Baptiste. In her attempt to secure a spot in the Wimbledon main draw, she may face 25th seed Eva Lys in the third round.

2. Alycia Parks

Alycia Parks (Image: Boris Streubel)

Alycia Parks has long been on the radar. Following her victory in Lyon, France, in February of last year, the 23-year-old American immediately rose into the top 40 rankings in the world.

Her best Slam performance to date came in January when she made it to the third round of the Australian Open, but she lost 13 straight games after that. Only a first-round qualifying victory at the French Open last month ended that run.

She would, however, be feeling much better after returning to the headlines with her victory in Sunday’s WTA $125K title match on grass in Gaiba, Italy.

In the opening round, Parks, who along with Venus Williams has the fastest serve in a women’s Grand Slam match, takes on Katarzyna Kawa of Poland. She could play in a challenging group that also features 15-year-old British hope Hannah Klugman, where she could face 12th seed Darja Semenistaja in the second round and 28th seed Linda Fruhvirtova in the third round.

3. Katie Volynets

Katie Volynets (Image: X)

Though she was barely on the direct entry list a few weeks ago, 22-year-old Katie Volynets has climbed to No. 71 in the most recent world rankings. The American claimed victory on clay in a WTA $125K event held in Croatia earlier this month, and last week, he prevailed in a match played on grass in Birmingham.

In her opening match, Volynets, who is ranked first in the qualifying draw, will face Francisca Jorge of Portugal. The 19th seed Jana Fett in the third round and the 2023 junior champion Clervie Ngounoue in the second round could be her opponents.

4. Rebecca Marino

Rebecca Marino (Chris Trotman/Getty Images)

The slippery grass is ideal for Rebecca Marino’s style of play. The Canadian enjoys playing aggressive tennis and possesses a huge serve. She now has a decent deal of experience to support her as well.

The 33-year-old should feel more confident going into the qualifying draw after winning an ITF W100 title in Ilkley over the weekend. She will face the No. 20 seed and American McCartney Kessler in a difficult opening-round match. In an attempt to earn one of the qualifying spots, she might play the rising Australian Maya Joint, who is eighteen, in the second round. Then, she might take on Renata Zarazua, the third seed.

5. Harmony Tan

Harmony Tan (Image: X)

In what ended up being Serena Williams’ final match at the All England Club, Harmony Tan of France pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Wimbledon history two years ago by defeating the American in a third-set tiebreak.

Although Tan advanced to the fourth round over those two weeks, her career did not take the turn she had hoped for. Since then, the 26-year-old is still seeking her maiden Grand Slam triumph in the main draw. The Frenchwoman, who has an 8-2 record on grass in the ITF circuit, is coming into this week having won an ITF W50 event in March, which is her best finish since her incredible run.

She would need to defeat sixth seed Maria Timofeeva and 21st seed Marina Bassols Ribera in her division to advance to the main draw after facing Elvina Kalieva in the first round.

The English journeyman defeated Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 6-4, 7-5 to advance to his first tour-level quarterfinal in London.

Here are five things to know about Billy Harris and His Journey From Vanman to Wimbledon Debut

Billy Harris Spent 3.5 Years Traveling Between Tournaments in a Van

At one point in his career, Billy Harris was a competitor on the ITF World Tennis Tour, which is a rung below the ATP Challenger Tour. To save money, he would frequently travel around Europe in a converted transport van. Harris slept in the van in addition to using it to go from city to city.

“I was travelling around in my transit van for three and a half years, with a bed in the back, cooking on the roadside and parking up in McDonald’s car parks,” he told the BBC in 2023. Billy Harris won four ITF singles titles in 2021 and one in 2022, giving him five overall.

Billy Harris Secures First Tour-Level Victory in Sofia Last November

Billy Harris won his first tour-level singles match two months before his 29th birthday, defeating Marc-Andrea Huesler of Switzerland 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(5). His only previous tour-level competition before this week’s London outing was the ATP 250. By making it to the Queen’s quarterfinals, he has increased his career win total to three, making him 3-1.

Billy Harris: British Davis Cup Hitting Partner

Billy Harris practiced alongside players including Andy Murray, Cameron Norrie, Dan Evans, and Draper during Great Britain’s 2023 Davis Cup run. Following his Thursday triumph over Mpetshi Perricard, he gave Draper credit for his quick ascent and his upset of Alcaraz.

“Amazing from Jack,” Harris stated. “He’s the future of British tennis and he’s leading the way. It’s great to look at him and see what he’s doing. I definitely take inspiration from that.”

Father Geoff Coaches Billy Harris Despite Having Tennis Background

Geoff Harris is his son’s primary coach, with support from British Davis Cup captain Leon Smith.

“He introduced me to tennis. In his post-match press conference on Thursday, Harris stated, “He hasn’t really got a tennis background, but he was always feeding me lots of balls when I first started.” “All he actually does is knock a few balls over the net.

He obviously has seen nearly every game I’ve played, so he is well-versed in my strategy. He simply reminds me of the things I’m working on and offers me weekly assistance; the team around me merely helps me out a little bit more throughout the matches.

Billy Harris is set for the Top 150 in the PIF ATP Rankings

After two straight ATP Challenger Tour semifinal runs (Nottingham, Surbiton), Harris came into Queen’s with a career-high PIF ATP Ranking of No. 162. This week, he has jumped 24 spots to No. 138 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, which would eclipse his junior career best of No. 139. Tuesday, Harris defeated World No. 32 Tomas Martin Etcheverry in three sets to record his greatest career victory per PIF ATP Ranking.

A wild card into Wimbledon, where Harris will make his Grand Slam debut in July, was also granted to him thanks to his recent success.
