Vinesh Phogat hails from a family of wrestlers in Haryana. She is the daughter of wrestler Rajpal Phogat and cousin of wrestlers Geeta and Babita, both internationally acclaimed wrestlers.
She rose into the global fame after overcoming challenges from society and with determination made her way into the international wrestling arena. She has successfully brought glory for India and made the nation proud.
Vinesh Phogat became the first Indian woman wrestler to win a gold medal at both the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. She is also the only Indian woman wrestler to clinch multiple medals at the World Wrestling Championships.
In world championship 2019 in Nur-Sultan, she bagged her maiden world championship medal in a bronze.
Phogat became the first Indian athlete to be nominated for the Laureus World Sports Awards in 2019.
However, the Indian wrestler’s dream of an Olympic medal is yet to be fulfilled. Phogat made into the quarter-finals of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro but had to forfeit the match due to an injury that she sustained during the bout against Sun Yanan of China.
Phogat faced a similar scenario at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics where she competed in the 53 kg category in the quarterfinals but was defeated Belarusian Vanesa Kaladzinskaya.

Commomwealth Games 2014
Vinesh Phogat won her first major gold in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She defeated England’s Yana Rattigan in the women’s freestyle 48 kg final bout. Phogat defeated the home favourite 11-8 in the final.
Asian Games 2018 Jakarta
Vinesh Phogat became the first Indian female wrestler to clinch a gold medal at the Asian Games. She won a gold in the 2018 Asian Games in the 53 kg category.
Atfter having won her quarterfinal and semifinal bout without losing a point, she was determined when she faced Japan’s Yuki Ire in the final.

Commonwealth Games 2022
Vinesh Phogat won a gold medal in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. She finished first in the 53 women’s kg category.
With this she also made a hat-trick by winning three consecutive gold medals in the Commonwealth Games, including the one in Gold Coast in 2018.
