Serbia’s Adriana Vilagoš claimed the women’s javelin title at the Ostrava Golden Spike Meet 2025 with a throw of 64.87 meters, edging out Japan’s Haruka Kitaguchi (63.88m) and the Czech Republic’s Andrea Železná (60.63m).

In the women’s 100 meters, Liberia’s Thelma Davis set a national record of 10.91 seconds, with New Zealand’s Zoe Hobbs (10.94) and Marie Josee Ta Lou-Smith (10.92) also posting outstanding times.

The Pan American Games 2027 are set to take place in Lima, Peru, from 16 July to 1 August 2027. The event will feature a diverse sports program. Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025, India’s premier javelin competition, has officially been rescheduled to 5 July 2025. The event will take place at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru, marking the first-ever World Athletics ‘A’ Category or Continental Tour Gold-level meet. 

The tournament was originally scheduled for 24 May 2025 at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula, Haryana. The initial venue change was due to the issues with floodlights at the Panchkula stadium. However, the event was further postponed due to the cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan.

“Bringing the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 back this quickly has taken an enormous collective effort, and we’re happy to confirm its return on July 5. Our teams have worked tirelessly, and the unwavering support from the Athletics Federation of India, the Karnataka Olympic Association, the Government of Karnataka, and our partners made this possible. The energy around this event is bigger than ever, and we’re set to deliver a celebration of javelin that’s bolder, better, and even more unforgettable,” said Karan Yadav, chief commercial officer, JSW Sports.

Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 is set to be the highlight event for Indian sports as the first World Athletics Gold Label event in the country. Neeraj Chopra, who recently won the Paris Diamond League 2025, is expected to be the star contender. However, the full line-up is also star-studded. Breaking into the 2025 Boston Marathon has become more challenging than ever, with runners needing to finish 6 minutes and 51 seconds faster than the qualifying standard for their age and gender. 

According to the Boston Athletic Association (BAA), this unprecedented cutoff is the highest ever in the history of the competition, as qualifying for the race has become more intensified due to a rush of applicants. 

More than 12,000 runners who met the qualifying standard for the 2025 Boston Marathon did not find a place for the event. Out of 36,393 runners who had qualified and applied for entry, only 24,069 were accepted, leaving 12,324 of them without a spot in the race. 

“The sport of marathoning is seeing record participation and increasingly faster performances,” said Jack Fleming, CEO of the BAA. “We can’t accommodate everyone, but we extend our gratitude and respect to all who pursued their dream of being part of the 2025 race.”

“Unfortunately, we’re unable to accept all athletes into the field, though we do want to recognize, thank, and applaud all whose goal was to be part of the 2025 event.”

Boston is considered a coveted rite of passage for marathoning enthusiasts. It is one of the few marathons requiring amateurs to meet a qualifying time to compete. Runners each year hope to “Boston qualify” based on their age and gender.  

The BAA has already announced stricter qualifying standards for future marathons, signaling an ongoing trend towards more exclusive entry.

Although the field size remains capped at 30,000 participants, the BAA has hiked the percentage of spots for qualifiers to 80%, an increase from 73.4% in 2024. In the previous edition, only 22,019 qualifiers were accepted.

This year’s 6:51 cutoff was only surpassed by the 2021 marathon, when a reduced field size due to COVID-19 guidelines led to a stricter 7:47 cutoff. The use of cutoffs began in 2014, with the smallest being 1:02 in 2015 and the largest, before 2021, being 4:52 in 2019. In 2018, the BAA lowered qualifying standards by 5 minutes across the board in response to rising demand for spots in the race.

For the 2020 marathon, which was ultimately canceled due to the pandemic, runners needed to be 1:39 faster than their age-group standards to make the cut. The pandemic also resulted in no cutoffs for the 2022 and 2023 editions, as fewer qualifying races were on the cards during that period. However, in 2024, demand surged again, with a cutoff of 5:29 and more than 11,000 runners missing out on entry.

The increasing competitiveness in qualifying signals the Boston Marathon’s continued status as one of the most prestigious and competitive marathons in the world. For many runners, just making it to the start line is big an achievement in itself.

The 2025 Boston Marathon is set for April 21.

The Paris Olympics 2024 are going to start on July 26th. For the first time in the Olympics, the red, blue, or orange track is being used in athletics instead of the purple track, where many new records are expected to be made and old records are expected to be broken. The local organizers of the Paris Olympics had chosen to use purple, blue, and green. These colours will be prominent in all the venues for the games. Talking about this, the organizers said, “We have never used this colour before. It is light purple and dark purple. It is reminiscent of the landscape of France.”

For this, Mondo Group is also taking feedback from the world’s top track and field athletes. According to the information, they have also developed more elastic and cohesive granules for the outer layer of the track in Paris.

Minor details such as the shape of the air cells inside the track and the dimensions of the air pickles have been optimized. This means that, on paper, the track at the Paris Olympics 2024 is the fastest track ever in Olympic history.

Avinash Sable is an Indian track and field athlete with specialization in 3000m steeplechase. He holds the national record of 8:11.20 which he set at the 2022 Commonwealth Games 

Sable was born in a family of farmers in Maharashtra. In order to provide for his family, he joined the Indian army and was deployed at extreme weather conditions.

It was in 2025 that Sable took to running and participated in inter-army cross country running  at the insistence of his army colleagues, before switching to steeplechase.

Ever since army man took up steeplechase as a sporting career, the runner has gone on to break several national records.

At the 2019 Doha worlds, Sable finished 13th in the final where he clocked 8:21.37 to better the national record once again and consequently qualified for Tokyo Olympics 2020. Thus, Avinash Sable became the first Indian to qualify in the steeplechase event at the Olympics since Gulzara Singh Mann in 1952.

The 29-year-old failed to qualify for the finals at his debut Olympic Games. However, he would like to make amends at the Paris Olympics 2024 and make the dream of an Olympic medal come true.

“This year I am working out differently for Paris. Every year I used to start my season early, in April-May in steeplechase, and before a major event when I should have competed more to check my preparations I used to focus on training. This year, I have started late and will be peaking gradually for the Olympics”, a confident Paris-bound Sable said.

2022 Commonwealth Games

The runner won the silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with a new national record time of 8:11.20. It was also the first time an athlete from outside Kenya had won a medal in men’s 3000 meters steeplechase at the Commonwealth Games since 1994.

2023 Asian Games

Sable clinched first major gold for India medal at the 2023 Asian Games, Hangzhou in 3000 m steeplechase. He achieved the feat by clocking 8:19:20.

2019 Asian Athletics Championships

The athlete won the silver medal at the 2019 Asian Athletics Championships in Doha, his debut international event, with a timing of 8:30.19.

A month ahead of its commencement, the Paris Olympics have hit a controversy with the European Olympic Committees reacting strongly against the World Athletics’ decision to pay prize money to its winners.

World Athletics (WA) announced $50,000 in prize money to its 48 champions in Paris Olympics 2024.

“The decision by World Athletics to offer prize money to gold medallists at next month’s Paris Olympics is discriminatory and goes against Olympic values”, European Olympic Committees president Spyros Capralos said.

Sebastian Coe, the head of World Athletics, however, said that the body would not offer cash prizes for the silver and bronze medal winners in Paris, but would do so at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.

Capralos said he would be attending the European athletics championships in Rome where he might possibly hold discussions on the matter.

Walking close on the heels of WA, the International Boxing Association (IBA) has also offered $100,000 to gold medal winners at the Paris Olympics 2024.

In addition, the IBA would also offer $50,000 and $25,000 for silver and bronze respectively.

The decisions received a backlash from the International Olympic Committee as well.

“We believe in the Olympic Games the athletes go there to compete for the values of the Olympic Games and their last preoccupation is to get money and bonuses,” said Capralos, who is also an IOC member.

“I think that every country through their National Olympic Committees and governments have set bonuses for athletes winning medals,” Mr Capralos told a press conference in Romania.

Capralos said there had been no discussions with either international federation since their recent announcements.

“I think just giving some money to the gold winner is discriminatory and does not follow the principles of solidarity”, he reiterated.

10,500 athletes are expected to compete across 32 sporting events in Paris that would run from July 26 through August 11.
