Avinash Sable is an Indian track and field athlete with specialization in 3000m steeplechase. He holds the national record of 8:11.20 which he set at the 2022 Commonwealth Games
Sable was born in a family of farmers in Maharashtra. In order to provide for his family, he joined the Indian army and was deployed at extreme weather conditions.
It was in 2025 that Sable took to running and participated in inter-army cross country running at the insistence of his army colleagues, before switching to steeplechase.
Ever since army man took up steeplechase as a sporting career, the runner has gone on to break several national records.

At the 2019 Doha worlds, Sable finished 13th in the final where he clocked 8:21.37 to better the national record once again and consequently qualified for Tokyo Olympics 2020. Thus, Avinash Sable became the first Indian to qualify in the steeplechase event at the Olympics since Gulzara Singh Mann in 1952.
The 29-year-old failed to qualify for the finals at his debut Olympic Games. However, he would like to make amends at the Paris Olympics 2024 and make the dream of an Olympic medal come true.
“This year I am working out differently for Paris. Every year I used to start my season early, in April-May in steeplechase, and before a major event when I should have competed more to check my preparations I used to focus on training. This year, I have started late and will be peaking gradually for the Olympics”, a confident Paris-bound Sable said.

2022 Commonwealth Games
The runner won the silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with a new national record time of 8:11.20. It was also the first time an athlete from outside Kenya had won a medal in men’s 3000 meters steeplechase at the Commonwealth Games since 1994.
2023 Asian Games
Sable clinched first major gold for India medal at the 2023 Asian Games, Hangzhou in 3000 m steeplechase. He achieved the feat by clocking 8:19:20.
2019 Asian Athletics Championships
The athlete won the silver medal at the 2019 Asian Athletics Championships in Doha, his debut international event, with a timing of 8:30.19.
